BREAKING: China says British Hong Kong consulate staffer given 15 days of administrative detention in Shenzhen.

BEIJING — China says a staffer at the British consulate in Hong Kong has been given 15 days of administrative detention in the Chinese city of Shenzhen.

At a daily briefing Wednesday, foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang offered no details about why he was being detained. The British foreign ministry had said it was “extremely concerned” about its staff member, identified by local media as Simon Cheng Man-kit, who attended a business event in Shenzhen on Aug. 8 but never returned to neighboring Hong Kong despite plans to do so the same day.

It is unclear whether the man possessed a diplomatic passport and Geng said he was a Hong Kong resident. Sino-British relations have grown tense in recent months amid pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, a former British colony.

Oh jeeeez

Will the UK do anything?

Tit-for-tat. Britain needs to detain a Chinese Consular staff in London.

China is clearly demonstrating it can act with impunity. If UKinHongKong do not react with sufficient strength it will put the final nail in the coffin of UK deterence power. The UK is on the brink of becoming an auxiliary force of the United States military.

This is going to be China’s way of “warning” other countries that they consider Hong Kong as their issue to solve. While minor in diplomatic circles they will report up the chain. Some of these countries will probably worry over their economic ties and Hong Kong will suffer

thug ccp mafia at it again. UK needs to respond

There’s no need to provide details on why, we all know why, the staffer is detained because China is a totalitarian dictatorship that can do what it wants.

Just a little nibble to gauge strength of reaction. During the Vietnam war it would be called 'a probe' on the position.
