Beijing's planned national security legislation for Hong Kong is set to block its foreign judges from handling national security trials, people familiar with the matter said, which would exacerbate concerns about the city's judicial independence.

BEIJING - Beijing’s planned national security legislation for Hong Kong is set to block its foreign judges from handling national security trials, people familiar with the matter said, which would exacerbate concerns about the city’s judicial independence.

The people familiar with the issue declined to be identified because they are not authorised to speak to the media. The Legislative Affairs Commission of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress could not immediately be reached for comment. China’s Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Hong Kong’s foreign judges stem from an arrangement established at its 1997 handover to help maintain its credibility as an international financial hub. The Hong Kong Bar Association said China’s plan to impose the law without public consultation or local legislative scrutiny had caused “deep unease in the local and international community”.Hong Kong’s mini-constitution, known as the Basic Law, enshrines the independence of the judiciary and states that judges may come from other common law jurisdictions.

Another Hong Kong delegate to the largely rubber-stamp NPC, Maggie Chan, proposed a National Security Court where cases could only be heard by Chinese judges, Hong Kong media cited her as saying on the sidelines of the NPC.The new legislation is also expected to enable Beijing to establish intelligence agencies in Hong Kong. Mainland security and intelligence services now have no enforcement powers in the city.

KongTsungGan Fucking good!

Surprise and big joke. HKG still retain foreign judge. What the judges do, protect street cockroaches Bug off.

boat215120 中国が焦ってるから猛スピードで変えようとしているよ!

KongTsungGan Right choice ! Why should let foreign judges decide a Chinese city’s own cases ? Local criminals should get a fair trial by true local people!

StandWithHongKong

Yikes

LIHKGPicks Declaring the end of common law legal system in HongKong? The Chinese judiciary system is utterly a joke.

LIHKGPicks Fake promise of autonomy of Hong Kong. Liar CCP

KongTsungGan Didn't know they have foreign judges? What nationality are these judges? Has Liverpool got any Chinese judges?

Can Chinese be judge of US?

Extreme Chinese patriotism. I thought Hong Kong’s legal system is still supposed to be independent.

CIA:WTF?

Coz it's contradictory to the Common Law, which Hong Kong is applying it It feels like CCP/ China gov puts its dick into a small ring to get orgasm, but we all knows that's not possible. All CCP will get is a decaying penis after all.....

'Secession, subversion, terrorism and foreign interference in the city', who belongs to this category of people, look at the reaction of these clowns, everyone should be aware.

lolll, what's the point? Anyhow CCP will pay them to sentence guilty on the case of NationalSecurityLaw . All defendant will be considered as 'traitors/ radicals/ thought-criminals' to their country 'China', tho China is not my country, Hong Kong is.

HK will completely lose judicial independence as China is known to have NO judicial independence. Anyone in HK could be prosecuted for absolutely no reason at all. China cannot be trusted! CCP

The United States literally does this right now

'Sources'? The earth is flat. Sources.

Who will believe in a law set by a tyranny? The law itself is not thr biggest prob, the one who execute and can freely redefine to suit their suppression is the evil AntiCCP StandWithHongKong

KongTsungGan Why are foreigners become judges in HK

KongTsungGan I think this is terrible mistake and so unfair, who decide that foreigner can’t be more patriotic to CCP than locals 😤

KongTsungGan The only way to ensure 100% conviction

Not at all surprising to HongKong people. China wants to shut the door on any neutral scrutiny. StandWithHongKong

If the law is to be enforced under the sun, why the world could not judge it!

Maybe first start barring government officials and their families from having foreign passports first. Like ALL the puppets/zombies in this picture? HongKong

KongTsungGan More and more outrageous details surfacing everyday. CCP are like vendors selling junk to western tourists in China. Asking RMB10,000 for a piece of fake jade that is worth RMB10, so if you bargain it down to RMB100+ it's a win for them. StandWithHongKong

CCP is detrimental to HongKong and the world. We must fight against CCPChina together for the mutual benefit of democracy! StandWithHongKong YouCantStopUs HKProtests

None of your business

Is that a racism towards the nationality of Judges?

just curious, besides Hong Kong, which country has foreign judges in high court?

Why is there a picture of pigeons?

The foreign judges were a failure anyway.

WomaninHavana BarHumanRights UKSupremeCourt National security law will ruin the legal system. The law have many loopholes and barring foreign judges will help CCP to pick pro-Beijing judge and interpret the loopholes following Beijing’s wishes. Hong Kong will be ruled by law

So CCP can make use of national security law to arrest all pro-democracy activists and have full control over Hong Kong judicial system. So who on earth still said the security law won’t affect HongKong Judicial independence and its autonomy

The Communist Party of China wants to destroy the judicial independence of Hong Kong, and then use its own people to take control of justice there
