China has enforced a lockdown in Shijiazhuang, a city with 11 million residents, blocking major highways, trains and flights in and out of the city as it attempts to clamp down on the country’s worst flare-up of Covid-19 cases in the past few months and in a repeat of a similar lockdown imposed in Wuhan almost a year ago....

The lockdown comes days before the Chinese Lunar New Year celebration, which officials fear could help accelerate the transmission if left unchecked.The lockdown in Shijiazhuang is the strictest the country has imposed ever since it managed to largely contain the outbreak last summer. The government had moved to lock down Wuhan, the epicenter of the Covid-19 outbreak just

the Lunar New Year celebrations last year, but millions had already traveled out of the city for the holiday, taking the virus with them. The latest lockdown in Shijiazhuang is attempting to prevent a redux of that scenario.
