China Box Office: ‘The Matrix Resurrections’ Underwhelms With $7.5M Opening

Lana Wachowski’s film, the fourth infranchise, was weighed down in China by rampant piracy and a poor reception among local moviegoers.has been widely available on Chinese piracy networks since the moment it opened in the U.S. simultaneously on HBO Max and in cinemas on Dec. 22.

Worse still for the franchise’s future prospects in China, local audiences don’t seem to much like the reboot, with it scoring just 7.5 on Alibaba’s flagship ticketing service Tao Piao Piao, 7.4 on Maoyan and 5.7 from Douban. Every major Chinese title currently on release has earned significantly higher ratings.

No one ask for it or wanted it.

It’s been pirated to high heaven in China, high quality HBO max rips are a pirates dream and most die hard Chinese fans watched it as soon as it came out on streaming. WB couldn’t have scripted a worse release strategy for this film.

This movie already LOOKED underwhelmed by the time its first trailer was released. Seemed outdated and no difference from John Wick movies. As the fans of the original trilogy, I decided to not watching it in theaters & to wai to for it on digital instead.

It definitely is not your parent’s Matrix. This is much different and a bit weird
