Netflix has announced the title for the upcoming Chicken Run 2 and released a first image that teases the film's storyline. The original Chicken Run, released in 2000, was the first feature-length film produced by Aardman Animations, who created the iconic British animated shorts Wallace and Gromit. The film follows a group of chickens, led by Ginger, desperately trying to escape the farm they are kept in before they are killed and baked into meat pies.
The film was an immense success and is, to this day, the highest-grossing stop-motion animated film in history. Despite this, Aardman opted not to pursue any sequels and instead produced more original features such as Flushed Away and Early Man as well as a feature-length Wallace and Gromit movie, Curse of the Were-Rabbit. But, nearly 18 years after the original, Aardman confirmed they were developing a follow up which is set to debut on Netflix in 2023.

The use of “nugget” in the title, while being a cute connotation for a baby chick, also implies that their child may not be as safe as they thought.
This comes after a slight controversy during the production of the film as both Julia Sawalha and Mel Gibson, the original voice actors for Ginger and Rocky, were confirmed to not be returning. In Gibson’s case, this is most likely due to numerous controversies that the actor has been involved with over the years, such as accusations of anti-Semitism and homophobia. Sawalha, however, accused the producers of ageism after receiving word that they would be recasting her role with a younger actor.
