Chicago mayor fires city’s top cop over ‘ethical lapses’

Mayor Lori Lightfoot announces the firing Monday, Dec. 2, 2019 of Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson.

“What he portrayed to me, what he portrayed to the public was fundamentally different than what the facts show,” she said. The underlying conduct “warranted this significant and serious action of relieving him of his role.” Johnson, a native Chicagoan, was named superintendent in 2016 by then-Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who had fired Superintendent Garry McCarthy after the release of the now-infamous video showing officer Jason Van Dyke shooting teenager Laquan McDonald. At the time, Emanuel was scrambling to restore public confidence.

He presided over an effort to hire more officers that increased the size of the force by about 1,000. Under his leadership, police also expanded the use of technology, including installing more surveillance cameras and embarking on the largest rollout of police body cameras in the country.

What’s wrong w/ sleeping in a parked car? Why do we think he lied about his heart meds? This Chief is a black man from the hood of Chicago, who led community policing in the area he grew up in. Firing him on his way out is a silly way to appease the ignorant populous.
