The statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville will soon be melted down and turned into new piece of public artwork, following a vote by city lawmakers

A statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee is lifted off its pedestal in Market Street Park in Charlottesville on July 10. By Teo Armus Teo Armus Local politics reporter covering Arlington and Alexandria Email Bio Follow December 7 at 10:14 AM The statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee that once provoked a deadly weekend of violence in Charlottesville will soon be melted down and turned into a new piece of public artwork, following a vote by city lawmakers early Tuesday morning.

But the Charlottesville City Council voted 4 to 0 to hand the bronze statue over to the only local bidder: the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center, a Black-led museum whose “Swords Into Plowshares” idea would repurpose the metal entirely. Artists will consult Charlottesville residents in the coming months, including in forums early next year, to determine what the public art might end up looking like. Douglas said she hopes that collaborative process can also provide a framework for other communities debating what to do with toppled Confederate monuments. The movement to take down the Lee statue began in 2015 with a petition crafted by Zyahna Bryant, who was then a local high school student.

The Lee monument was vandalized with paint and graffiti, and residents fought over whether it could be shrouded in black cloth following Heyer’s death. Politicians on both sides of the aisle cited the statue and what it had come to symbolize.

Good! Time to stop celebrating and glorifying seditionists!

I’m 100 percent in favor of removal, but that’s absurd. It should be put in a museum and provided with historical context about the evils of slavery and Lee’s role in attempting to perpetuate it.

Melt that mf

Racism solved.

Very upsetting

Good. There is a difference between remembering and revering. We should remember (and teach about) traitors. We should not revere them.

Virginia to remove pedestal where Robert E. Lee statue once stood in RichmondVirginia Gov. Northam announces that his administration will remove pedestal that until earlier this year held a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in Richmond. Wouldn’t it be amazing if that worked like moving the queen bee… and all the little racists followed along & left I suggest that Northam leave the base and use it as a tribute to Trump. For on top of the base, remove General Lee and the front half of the horse from the statue and mount the rest. Given our nature, shouldn't all of our 'displays' simply be phalli, erect penes, like the Washington Monument, xmas trees, church steeples, skyscrapers.... We could convert them all to water features for a pissing contest.
