The 1,100-pound bronze statue of Robert E. Lee that was at the center of a 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., will soon be melted down and repurposed into a new public artwork

The 1,100-pound bronze statue of Robert E. Lee that was at the center of a 2017 white supremacistA proposal by the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center was accepted Tuesday by the Charlottesville City Council. Titled “Swords Into Ploughshares,” the project will see Lee’s statue re-created into an entirely new form following input from the community.

In February 2017, the city of Charlottesville voted to remove statues of Lee and Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson. In protest, a group of white supremacists organized an Aug. 11-12 rally called “Unite the Right,” which saw white nationalists marching through Lee Park and the campus of the University of Virginia chanting, “Jews will not replace us.”

Violent clashes between white supremacists and counterprotesters unfolded on Aug. 12. James Alex Fields Jr., who was protesting the removal of the Lee statue, rammed his car into a group of counterprotesters, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injuring others. As with monuments erected across the South in the decades following the North’s victory in the Civil War, the statue of Lee was a gift to the city. Commissioned by Paul McIntire, a Virginia stockbroker, in 1917 and completed in 1924, it “highlighted a particular ideology that we no longer share,” Douglas, the museum director, said.

Art, Black is beautiful! I just sh-t a masterpiece!!!

I would like to see a Museum of America's Darkness (not history because hatred still exist today) Can we handle that truth? If not, all of the dismantling of statues is just a sham.

Yahoo

I hate that they are doing that to the statue. I get why. But this statue represents history even as dark as that history was at that time. It's still history. We can't cover it over w/ some gloss and paint & say it never happened. We must learn from it so that we never repeat it

Another rothschild war that never ended! American history= war criminal record!

they should melt it and sink it in the ocean

Lashing out much.... it's not going to change your past...and doing this doesn't make you a better person or a better society...just an over reacting fool. Stop pretending things are going to be better...make it better
