Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo spent the past 15 years redefining what was possible in the Champions League. But in the space of 24 hours this week, their era of dominance came to a halt.

PARIS—Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo spent the past 15 years redefining what was possible in the Champions League. They were the immovable fixtures of the European soccer spring. Reaching the semifinals was practically a guarantee for them. And more often than not, one or the other would go on to win the whole thing—a feat Messi and Ronaldo pulled off a combined nine times since 2006.came to a halt.

For the first time since 2005, the Champions League will proceed to the quarterfinals without either one. Which isn’t to say the tournament is lacking for star power. Robert Lewandowski, Bayern Munich’s reigning world player of the year, is still in. So is the electric duo of Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland and PSG’s Kylian Mbappé, two players with the potential to light up the Champions League for a decade. The tournament that Messi and Ronaldo helped cement as the glitziest in the sport has moved beyond them.

“It’s sad because they are two great players,” Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman said in Spanish. “You just have to accept it.”

lewy_official should take advantage of this and win the UCL 🏆 which will eventually land him to win the Balan D'or

Only God always remains relevant and those who know him.

Ronaldo redefined it not Messi, come with all stats

Who are they? What’s the Championship League?

Ya that fuckin burned my nose hairs right the fuck off man. Very intense, I could not finish it. They don't have it like that home. That's ngoing to be jennifer's little secret that will never be told to a living soul. I guess I will just be selfish & keep it all to myself. On me.

Both players still have a fair amount left in the tank, but it’s clear the end is in sight. It’ll be interesting to see who picks up the crown as the best in the world. I sense EPL, La Liga and Bundesliga will each ramp up marketing in an attempt to anoint the next would-be king.

They will be back again :-)... It's been a privilege to be able to see them being the yardstick of club football.
