Much of the rest of the nation seems unaware of the legacy left by the iconic Chicano union and civil-rights leader

I get incredulous looks when I tell people on the East Coast that my office will close for Cesar Chavez Day.

There is no Cesar Chavez Street in Washington, D.C., as there is in San Francisco, and no Cesar Chavez Elementary School or Chavez Student Center. Of the 125 parks, libraries, streets, and schools named after Chavez listed by Wikipedia, 61 are in California, including 13 in the Bay Area.

President Obama proclaimed Chavez’s birthday a “commemorative holiday" in 2014. However, the federal government honors only four individuals for whose birthdays it shuts down: Martin Luther King Jr., George Washington, Christopher Columbus, and Jesus Christ. ‘Tremendous’ support a lifeline to AsiaSF’s present, future The cabaret, long headlined by transgender women performers, is staying open another month. Chavez was revered. He rubbed shoulders with Robert Kennedy, marched with Joan Baez and fasted nearly to the point of starvation to bring attention to the plight of exploited farmworkers. But that was several generations ago.
