The CDC Director predicts that the winter could bring 200,000 deaths—the 'most difficult' period of the U.S’.s public health history

With the White House coronavirus task force already warning states this week that Covid-19 risk nationwide has reached “a historic high,” Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield is predicting that the pandemic will take a severe turn for the worse over the next three months. Key Facts

“The reality is December and January and February are going to be rough times,” said Redfield during a U.S. Chamber of Commerce event on Wednesday, adding: “I actually believe they’re going to be the most difficult time in the public health history of this nation.

It doesn’t have to be this way, says Redfield, highlighting clear scientific evidence that “masks work” and lamenting—though without naming names—a lack of “harmony” in messaging around pandemic precautions. “The truth is, mitigation works,” said Redfield. “The challenge with this virus is, it’s not going to work if half of us do what we need to do. It’s not even going to work, probably if three quarters of us do what we need to do.

Americans Scrambling For Covid Vaccine After CDC Director Announces Thousands Of Doses Buried Somewhere In CaliforniaATLANTA—Piling into motorcycles, biplanes, rowboats, and any other means of conveyance available to them, millions of Americans began scrambling for a coronavirus vaccine Friday after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced thousands of doses were buried somewhere in California. “As soon as [CDC Director Rochelle] Walensky dropped that cryptic hint that a tremendous cache of doses was hidden in a California state park, my brother and I began racing across the country to be the first ones there,” said local man Phineas K. Rogue, rushing to commandeer a firetruck after a rival vaccine-seeker shot an arrow through his hot air balloon, causing it to deflate. “We’ve already thrown a trail of tacks and broken glass onto the road behind us and put up a faulty detour sign leading straight down a cliff, so after we cut down this rope bridge, nobody will be able to catch us. Why, we’ll have gotten our second shot administered by the time these jabbering jackanapes reach Nevada. Those inoculations will be mine, all mine, I tell you!” At press time, Rogue and his brother were forced to recalibrate their strategy after plowing through a barn led to their vehicle becoming covered in dozens of clucking chickens. \n ...under a big W! Ex-CDC director says he believes coronavirus originated in Wuhan labFormer CDC Director Robert Redfield told CNN on Friday that he believes the coronavirus 'escaped' from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and that it was spreading as early as September or October of 2019 — though he stressed that it was his 'opinion.'Why it matters: It's a stunning assertion, offered with little evidence, by the man who led the U.S. government's public health agency from the time the virus was first detected in Wuhan through the entirety of the Trump administration's response.Get market news worthy of your time with Axios Markets. Subscribe for free. The big picture: The debate over the origins of the coronavirus has been ongoing since the start of the pandemic, causing rising tensions between the U.S. and China — especially during the presidency of Donald Trump, who frequently accused the Chinese government of 'unleashing' a 'plague' on the world. The Wuhan Institute of Virology is the only facility in China permitted to handle the most dangerous known pathogens, and is located just under nine miles from the wet market where some scientists say the outbreak may have originated.A World Health Organization team that traveled to Wuhan to investigate the origins of COVID-19 said it is 'extremely unlikely' the virus came from a laboratory accident, and that it most likely jumped to humans via an intermediate species. However, China refused to provide the WHO team with raw data about the first cases detected in Wuhan, leading the Biden administration to issue a statement expressing 'deep concerns' about the investigation and demanding transparency from Beijing. What they're saying: 'I'm of the point of view that I still think the most likely etiology of this pathology in Wuhan was from a laboratory. Escaped. Other people don't believe that. That's fine. Science will eventually figure it out,' Redfield told CNN's Sanjay Gupta.'It's not unusual for respiratory pathogens that are being worked on in a laboratory to infect the laboratory worker. ... That's not imp I agree with Robert Redfield, he’s speaking facts Believing and knowing are two different things. Isn’t science all about testing your hypothesis to death until it is fact?
