“With few exceptions,” Bernstein wrote, “their craven public silence has helped enable Trump’s most grievous conduct — including undermining and discrediting the [United States electoral system.”
None of the names are exactly surprising. Some, like Rubio, have been the target of the president’s humiliating insults. Others, like Collins and Murkowski, have occasionally pushed back on the president, even as they failed to take concrete action to rein him in and mostly went along with his agenda. The list also includes the handful of Republican senators, Sasse among them, who have acknowledged Biden’s election victory.
Of all those listed by Bernstein, only Romney can be said to have actually put his money where his mouth is; the Utah senator was the only Republican to Trump during his impeachment trial earlier this year. Still, Romney has participated in some of this administration’s most shameful exploits, including the rushed installation ofto the Supreme Court. That may reflect the grip Trump still has on the party, but it also reflects the extent to which Republicans' and Trump’s interests align, even as they are made uncomfortable by his rhetoric and behavior.
“We are witnessing the mad king in the final days of his reign, willing to scorch the Earth of his country and bring down the whole system,” Bernstein said in the, during which he named some of the senators who’d spoken of their distaste of the president. “They know what's going on.” With their names public, you'd think those Republicans might be shamed into doing the right thing and finally stand up to Trump.
