Hospitals, grocery stores and other essential services are enlisting robots to fill in gaps as workers go remote, accelerating an already fast-growing market for workplace automation

The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin is deploying software robots—software applications that generate an automatic response to data inputs—to speed up the processing of test results for Covid-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus.

As of Friday, Dublin contained over half of the 4,273 confirmed cases in Ireland, the Irish government reported. There have been 120 deaths in the country. Newsletter Sign-up CIO Journal The Morning Download delivers daily insights and news on business technology from the CIO Journal team.Mark O’Connor, UiPath’s public sector director in Ireland, said hospitals all over the world use software robots to automate appointment scheduling, claims management and some lab testing. By expanding the Covid-19 project to other hospitals, Mr. O’Connor said the robots will enable more front-line nurses to “operate as nurses and not systems administrators.

Shane Herlet, chief operating officer of Westport, Conn.-based Maplewood Senior Living, said the outbreak prompted the senior-care facility operator to fast-track a project to introduce robots at its 14 old-age homes. The robots play an important role in helping residents follow social distancing and isolation rules, Mr. Herlet said. To protect its residents, Maplewood has restricted visits, closed common spaces and is relying more on remote, rather than in-person, consultations. Global data show that the elderly are far more likely to succumb to Covid-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus.

The 10,000-square-foot centers, which can be up and running in four months, can hold up to 15,000 different products. When customers place online orders, multiple robots are dispatched to gather items and bring them to a bagging station.

Wisconsin mayors implore top health official to 'step up' and shut down primaryMayors from some of the most populous cities in Wisconsin are calling on the state’s top health official to shut down in-person voting at Tuesday’s primary Because the Dems can't cheat if actual people showed up to the polls and vote. This is how the rotten GOP works. If Democrats die, all the better for them. These are 'ever-trumpers' who go from voter area to voter area, in an attempt to stop the public voting (which leans towards Democrats). This is because the public voting allows all Blacks, Asians, & others to freely vote for who they want without the threat of meddling. VOTE!
