The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin is deploying software robots—software applications that generate an automatic response to data inputs—to speed up the processing of test results for Covid-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus.
As of Friday, Dublin contained over half of the 4,273 confirmed cases in Ireland, the Irish government reported. There have been 120 deaths in the country. By expanding the Covid-19 project to other hospitals, Mr. O’Connor said the robots will enable more front-line nurses to “operate as nurses and not systems administrators.
Shane Herlet, chief operating officer of Westport, Conn.-based Maplewood Senior Living, said the outbreak prompted the senior-care facility operator to fast-track a project to introduce robots at its 14 old-age homes. The robots play an important role in helping residents follow social distancing and isolation rules, Mr. Herlet said. To protect its residents, Maplewood has restricted visits, closed common spaces and is relying more on remote, rather than in-person, consultations. Global data show that the elderly are far more likely to succumb to Covid-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus.
The 10,000-square-foot centers, which can be up and running in four months, can hold up to 15,000 different products. When customers place online orders, multiple robots are dispatched to gather items and bring them to a bagging station.
