For decades, Japanese American activists have marked Feb. 19 as a day to reflect on one of the darkest chapters in this nation’s history.
On that date in 1942, during World War II, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt authorized the forced removal of over 120,000 Americans of Japanese descent from their homes and businesses. It’s expected to approve, with Gov. Gavin Newsom’s endorsement, a formal apology to all Americans of Japanese descent for the state’s role in policies that culminated with their mass incarceration.
This isn’t the first time Sacramento has tied California’s anti-Japanese hysteria to immigration actions by the current administration: In 2017, then-Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law a bill that asked schools, in teaching about World War II, to connect the xenophobia of that era to the “civil liberties injustices” of Trump’s clampdown on immigration from countries he deemed suspect.
Nor is this the first time California politicians have pushed residents to reckon with past sins against Japanese Americans. In 1988, Congressman Norman Mineta and Bob Matsui were among the co-sponsors of the Civil Liberties Act, which included a federal apology to surviving detainees and distributed $20,000 to them. The California Department of Education has long listed the 1973 young-adult novel “Farewell to Manzanar” as “recommended literature” to be taught in schools. And for decades, principals have awarded
I read world war 11 , March of Batan and Hell ships. We have to give some forgiveness it the past , even bad events, we all can agree on.
Um the president at that time was a . Democrat
What a joke. We were at war. Japan was on step away from invading the west coast. Japanese soya were everywhere. Can you say Pearl Harbor? Vote these Liberal Dims out of office. They are destroying our state and country.
Too bad we won't be around in 100 years when California reckons with the tens of thousands of homeless Vets and families when it boasted of a surplus of billions of dollars.
'California defined anyone with 1/16th or more Japanese lineage as sufficient to be interned.' 'The United States Census Bureau assisted the internment efforts by spying and providing confidential neighborhood information on Japanese Americans.'
What about all the Spaniards/ Mexicans/Indians who were frikking slaughtered for their lands in the 1800’s !!!
Good! And other reckonings in the article I hadn't read before. Nice work all around!
Blah. Blah. Blah.
how about they apologize to me for godzilla?
So tired of all these revisionist actions
Did I miss japans apology for war atrocities like the Bataan death march? I forget, who started that war.
Next step: Raparations.
We did what we had to do, they bombed us, and it was very apparent they had spies in Pearl harbor. History can be cruel, but so was the the unprovoked attack on pearl harbor
africaupdates But these people lost everything; most are dead now. So what reparations will be paid to them, or their living descendants?
California didn't mistreat them, the federal government ordered internment.
CALIFORNIA to apologize for running itself into the sewer
Better late than never I guess
i was questioning why we need this after the 1988 civil liberties act, formal apology by reagan, reparations to survivors, decades of programs teaching the issue-from reading the comments, people-even those with interned family members-are still woefully ignorant of the history
I hope more healing can occur from this. What a terrible instance of mistreatment by our government.
MsVeracruzV I think that history was history and we have to worry about creating a better world.
freeloosedirt Good. Now the Japanese NEED to apologize to the s. Korean Comfort Women survivors.
mpgarza2012 Hope South Dakota & the entire America West follows that lead NativeAmerican
My mother passed last year at 96 and won't know this. She and her parents, sister and brothers were stripped of their farm in Visalia and sent to Gila, AZ. Will this act be recorded in the history books? JapaneseAmericans internment California
This was a precaution due to the recent pearl harbor attack. FDR had no choice but to play it safe, he was getting word of Japanese informants secretly relaying information back to the Japanese government. FDR was still one of the greatest presidents of all time. No questions.
Thank you LiberalismIsAMentalDisease for finally fessing up.
mausoliam95 Muh bad
wow, CA's Government is crap. They attacked us. Many Japanese where actually spies.
Rounded up by Racist Democrats
Nigerian has more trending than Japanese Americans, eh?
That's a start
We can thank one of the worst presidents in US history, FDR.
Thanks FDR and the Democrat controlled SCOTUS for that . Korematsu vs US.
💔🙏🌹
How about apologizing to the Black Panthers you killed
Did it happen?
Gustavo . . 'Muratsuchi told. .hopelessly divided along party lines and Pres Trump is putting immigrant families and children in cages.” Shame on you for dividing us. Pres Obama was also putting them in cages, and lost track of some 60,000 illegal immigrant children in one yr.
it was WAR, Japan attacked the USA ! These were measures of precaution, nothing else
