Feb. 22, 2021 -- The Rev. Bob Stein, a pastor at Saints Peter & Paul Church in San Francisco, died on Tuesday, about a week after officials announced that a small coronavirus outbreak occurred at the church.“We are deeply touched and grateful for the prayers and support so many of you have sent for those of us who tested positive for COVID,” according to an announcement on the church’s“We are sorry to say that Fr. Bob Stein passed away early on the morning of Feb. 16,” the announcement said.
Stein, two other priests, and three caregivers contracted the virus, the newspaper reported. The church decided not to hold Mass during the Feb. 13 weekend and closed the sanctuary for private prayer. Last June, Saints. Peter & Paul was one of several churches accused of defying COVID-19 health orders. Dennis Herrera, the city attorney for San Francisco, issued a cease-and-desist order to the Archdiocese of San Francisco to urge churches to stop holding indoor services,, accordingThe church conducted “both indoor and outdoor gatherings over the past three weekends that violate the Health Order and jeopardize the health and safety of San Franciscans,” Herrera wrote.
The church also held a wedding in early July that resulted in 10 attendees testing positive for COVID-19, including the married couple, according . Herrera’s office sent attorney Peter Keith to order the ceremony to move outdoors, which they did.
