[+]Two decades ago, platforms like iTunes revolutionized the music industry, as they made it possible for people to purchase just one song at a time, instead of having to head to a record store to snag the latest album or even multi-song single from an artist they loved. Now, years later, buying an individual song has fallen out of fashion, as the masses have largely shifted toward streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music to listen to whatever they like, whenever they like.
Every year, the number of songs that are sold in the U.S. drops precipitously, and in the first half of 2021, purchases of digital tracks fell by more than 20% when compared with the same time period last year. While the vast majority of musicians just can't convince their fans to buy songs like they once did, there is one act that doesn't seem to have a difficult time selling like the biggest in the world used to.
BTS leads the charge on MRC Data's annual midyear report, as their current single"Butter" stands out as the bestselling song in the first half of 2021, and it wasn't a close race at all. The track has sold 841,000 copies in the first six months of the year, but its performance is actually even more impressive than it may seem at first, as the summery smash was only released in mid-May.
"Butter" is the only song so far this year to sell at least half a million copies in the U.S., and it is already on track to end 2021 as perhaps the bestselling title. The second-bestselling track in America so far this year is by the same band, as their previous No. 1"Dynamite" has managed to sell another 283,000 copies. That sum is on top of what it sold in 2020, when it wrapped the calendar year as the bestselling release with well over one million units sold.
