to not just rally against racism, but to uplift stories of joy that show the fullness of the AAPI experience. This May, Teen Vogue is shining light on that full spectrum, from history you're not taught in school to cultural contributions we'd all be worse without. In this op-ed, writer Katie Li examines the impact of BTS’ success on her own dancing.
As a competitive dancer of eight years, I’ve spent countless hours rehearsing, stretching, packing, traveling, doing makeup, and searching frantically for bobby pins — all for those few precious moments on stage. For some fellow dancers, performing is the culmination of their hard work; it represents all their efforts coming to fruition. For others, it’s a chance to convey a message or to entertain an audience.
By nature, dance — as well as other performing arts — deeply values precision and coordination. Behind every small movement the audience sees are hours of rehearsal to ensure that everyone is completely in sync. Hairstyles, makeup, and costuming exist to make every dancer match a given concept in the most uniform way possible.
My skin tone makes me an automatic outlier among all the white girls I dance with. At age 12, a fellow dancer offered me her foundation while we did our makeup. When I told her that the shade was far paler than my skin tone, she laughed. “That’s why you should put it on,” she told me. That’s the first time it hit me — I didn’t even need to make a mistake in the choreography to destroy the group’s pristine image. By default, I was already a stain, an irregularity.
