A fire official who was not authorized to speak publicly confirmed the death toll Sunday to The Associated Press, while a city official who was not authorized to speak publicly confirmed the number of children dead.Officials say the five-alarm fire began inside a duplex located on the 2nd and 3rd floors of an apartment building located at 333 East 181st Street just before 11 a.| UPDATED: January 9, 2022 at 11:12 a.m.and has been"knocked down," the FDNY said.on Sunday.NEW YORK (AP) — Dozens of people suffered life-threatening injuries in a large apartment fire in the Bronx on Sunday, in what New York City’s fire commissioner said was one of the worst blazes in the city in recent memory.According to FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro, smoke from the fire ran the entire height of the 19-story building, and responding firefighters found victims in stairwells on every floor of the building.Footage from social media shows firefighters attempting to scale numerous ladders in order to save people.

Nigro reported that 32 people were taken to hospitals in life-threatening condition as a result of the fire, but the ultimate death toll could be the worst the city has seen since the Happy Land fire in 1990 that killed 87 people.Photos posted online showed a rescue ladder extended up to an eighth-floor window.Firefighters were met by"very heavy smoke, very heavy fire" in the hallways."This is going to be one of the worst fires we have witnessed here in modern times in the city of New York," Mayor Eric Adams said at a press conference.Nigro said that the door of the apartment where the fire started had been left open, allowing the fire and smoke to spread through the building.Firefighters “found victims on every floor and were taking them out in cardiac and respiratory arrest,” he said.Injuries from the fire include 32 people with life-threatening injuries, 9 people in serious condition, and 22 people with non-life-threatening injuries.The injuries were predominantly from smoke inhalation, he said.Roughly 200 firefighters responded to the blaze.We expect there to be numerous fatalities.Footage posted online shows firefighters on the scene scaling ladders in what appears to be an effort to rescue people from the building.
