Box Office: ‘Mortal Kombat’ tops ‘Demon Slayer’ with a strong $22.5 million weekend

Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema’stopped the domestic weekend box office, opening with a solid $22.515 million. That’s essentially tied with the $23.5 million debut of Paul W.S. Anderson’sback in August of 1995 . Yes, this clearly anticipated and buzzy franchise revamp could have flirted with $50 million had it opened in normal circumstances on January 15, 2021 as initially intended.

The Japanese anime, which has already earned a record $400 million in Japan and $435 million overseas, debuted in 1,600 theaters with $19.5 million for a $12,188 per-theater average. That’s the biggest foreign-language debut ever and the biggest Fri-Sun per-theater average for a domestic release sinceopened with $58 million over the Fri-Sun portion of a $72 million Presidents Day launch in February of 2020. The -style cinematic in-between chapter of the popular anime is already over $455 million worldwide.nabbed a $9.8 million Fri-Sun and $20 million Wed-Sun debut in January of 2020, eventually earning $30.7 million domestic .
