put it: “The thing isn’t even campy, goofy fun. It’s inexplicably joyless and morose.” Like the musical, “Cats” centers on a tribe of cats called the Jellicles, one of which will be selected to receive a new life.
Moreover, Universal has scored with movie musicals like “Les Miserables,” “Mamma Mia” and its 2018 sequel and the “Pitch Perfect” franchise. The studio hired Hooper again after the director steered the studio’s 2012 “Les Miserables” to $441 million globally and a handful of Oscar nominations. But Hollywood has missed the mark before when it comes to re-imagining beloved shows for the simple reason that built-in fanbases won’t compensate for quality.
The eternal optimists point to Fox’s unexpected success with 2017’s “The Greatest Showman.” That musical, starring Hugh Jackman as circus ringmaster P.T. Barnum, was virtually dismissed by critics. It launched in late December, arriving with an uninspired $8.8 million. But audiences fell in love with its soundtrack and returned to multiplexes multiple times for singalong screenings that encouraged crowds to belt catchy tunes like “This Is Me.
It’s times like this I think of the myriad of films that could’ve really used this budget/distribution.
“Only the pure innocence of youth can truly appreciate the lunacy of this story, yet adults will likely spend the entirety of the movie wondering why they can’t stop thinking about fucking those cats.” Kevin Fallon. Daily Beast
Yup, blame it on the buzz 🐝
It's just a bad, bad, BAD movie:(
It's a terribly outdated musical with no story whatsoever and no catchy songs, that would never have worked on the big screen in any form, but thanks for trying to blame the effects.
boycotthollywood
I feel bad for any straight man, who got dragged to this thing.
I didn’t care to see if, but I’ve noticed people love to pile on & overreact negatively to movies & shows these days. It’s like a mindless Twitter mob. They did it with Game of Thrones, Joker, etc. People want to outdo each other in saying how bad something is and be outraged.
They still think girls don’t like Star Wars. WOW. In the year of our lord 2019? They deserve this failure. DESERVE IT.
The theatre pages are positively littered with critique
I would still see it Many of the actors will make it a purrrfect movie to see
I really enjoyed it on the London stage. I rarely go to the movies.
Apparently they didn't watch the film. If anything the critics created buzz to get people to see this trainwreck. They prepared me well before I witnessed it.
Most people are going to see Star Wars. Cats is better suited in live theater. I can see social media destroying things or helping. Look what it did for a plain jane chicken sandwich.
Also, the movie is not good. That tends not to help.
cgi is nice
Good news, at least people are not that silly. ..
unfortunately it has 8 more lives
Maybe a different release date would of helped a little bit?
I was out before the critical fire storm.
Orrrrrr maybe it's just a bad movie
Na it was just a bad movie with weird special effects that weren’t even completed yet
Also, the fact that it’s just bad also hurt it.
It wasn’t even bad lol. People want to cry about anything these days.
And you’re leaving out that the story is awful.
Actual review from rotten tomatoes: 'Despite its fur-midable cast, this Cats adaptation is a clawful mistake that will leave most viewers begging to be put out of their mew-sery.'
Someone wanted their furry porn on the big screen NTTATWWT
They shouldnt have made the movie
'CATS Got Spayed' That's the headline.
Could it be that it was a bad idea to make a Cats movie from the start?
The concept of CATS ,even when it was on Broadway a long time ago, is bizarre but I enjoyed everyone’s performances CatsMovie
I thought the movie was entertaining and didn’t find it creepy. As far as CGI I didn’t find it as outlandish as Midway.
Someone doesn’t know the story- there is a plot- one that could be compared to how the elderly are treated in this country.
The problem was Universal marketed Cats to a young female audience with the casting of Jason Derulo and Taylor Swift but had no idea what they were going to see as the musical isn't as accessible as Mamma Mia!, but older audiences who knew the show have enjoyed it much more
A GOOD movie wouldn't even have a shot if it's not a superhero or Disney much less that.
I loved the movie.
Cause Hollywood sucks
It was Cats: The Movie?
There was no market for it, kinda like the Charlie’s angels reboot they blamed on men for being a bust, your whole industry is awful, lucky if there is 3 good movies a year made
If audiences saw that movie, it was a hairball night.
Not all stage shows translate well to the big screen. It happens. Mixed with bad CGI and 'who asked for this shit' - it's pretty easy to see why it failed.
Maybe, just maybe, it's a bad movie. It happens.
I loved it, didn't find it creepy in the slightest.
It’s horrible movie as well more than bad CGI
It’s a cult classic
“CATS” Is great
Because cats suck
It’s just the creepiness, no offense to the very good people who made the movie.
