The Boston Book Festival, which runs from October 16-23, has selected “Dumba Chora” by Chandreyee Lahiri for its One City One Story city-wide read. The story, set in the Sundarbans region of India, was selected from a record number of submissions.

Of the connection between fact and fiction as her inspiration, Lahiri, who was born in Kolkata, India and has lived in the Greater Boston area for 20 years, said, “The Sundarbans is the prime habitat for the Bengal Tiger but my fictional one has deeper roots. My family can trace a few generations down to a small rural town named Chirimiri, in the erstwhile state of Madhya Pradesh in Central India. It was a heavily forested, sparsely populated region that is rich in coal reserves.

Lahiri, whose 25-year career has been in GIS for environmental management, said that upon learning of the story’s selection, getting over imposter syndrome “was a very real hurdle,” but she’s now “thrilled to have this acknowledgement from the literary community that the work I have put in all these years in my spare time to hone my style and ‘voice’ has been somewhat fruitful. I’m also honored that this story will transport readers into a culture and an environment so distant and lush.
