Henrietta, N.Y. — Chief Stephen Wise said the policy change could be made as soon as this fall, adding that the officers have been armed with handguns since 2009.
The department proposed adding rifles to its arsenal in June 2023. Last month, MCC President Deanna Burt announced to faculty that the department would move forward with the plan after multiple "listening sessions""We worked very hard with our local law enforcement partners," said Wise. "We've talked to the sheriff's department. We have a great partnership with the town of Brighton Police Department.
Wise said issuing rifles to his officers would better prepare the department and could decrease response times in critical events, namely active shooter threats, in which other agencies would normally have to respond to MCC's campus. "I think I would be remiss in my role if I wasn’t trying to plan for something like that," said Wise. "A lot of people come to this campus. A lot of families send their children here. A lot of adult learners come to MCC and we have to be as safe as possible, and I want to have the best response to a multitude of scenarios.
The officers will have to undergo a weeklong training course before they are issued the rifles. Wise said he expects the process to be completed as early as the school's fall 2024 semester.
