The cast of "The NFL Today” will change this fall, with Phil Simms and Boomer Esiason leaving. CBS is shaking up its “NFL Today” crew, parting company with Boomer Esiason and Phil Simms and adding former Atlanta Falcons and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Matt Ryan to its Sunday pregame show.
Host James Brown returns, as do former player Nate Burleson and former coach Bill Cowher. Joining the crew on a part-time basis this fall will be J.J. Watt, the defensive end who retired after the 2022 season, CBS said in a statement. Esiason, 63, acknowledged the change during his “Boomer and Gio” WFAN radio show and said he had signed an extension to stay with Gregg Giannotti on the program, which is simulcast on CBS Sports Network. “I am stepping away from ‘The NFL Today’ on CBS, more their decision than maybe mine,”on the show, “but I really thought that the Super Bowl was my swan song” after 22 years with CBS.
“I grew up watching 'The NFL Today,’ so I’m honored to join this iconic show and hope to continue the high standard set by Phil, Boomer and others before me,” Ryan said in the network’s news release. “I am thankful for this exciting new opportunity and can’t wait to get started with my new teammates.”Other changes may be coming to network coverage of the NFL this fall.
