Prioritizing mental wellness “shows how strong of a competitor and person that you really are, rather than just battle through it,” she said.Four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka, who is of both Japanese and Haitian descent, first raised concerns about her mental health in June when she avoided speaking to the press during the French Open, and ultimately pulled herself out of the competition until the Tokyo Games.
“It’s so beautiful to witness this sort of normalization of mental health and asking for help,” O’Hare said. “They’re really pushing that barrier and saying I can’t, I need help, I’m struggling, I need support. ... If we really listen to what they’re asking, we can hear a whole lot.”Even with the increased discussion, the overlooking of Black women’s mental and emotional wellness is far from new.
While they are architects and leaders of the modern movement against police violence, Black women are also victims of it. And with various studies showing Black people as much as three times as likely as white people to be fatally shot by police, Black women are more often grieving the loss of family members or close friends to police violence.
But such activism is not a burden for Black women alone, Cullors said, adding that they could simply prioritize themselves if that’s what they consider best.
Can you STOP making EVERYTHING about race!!! WHITE people have mental health issues too.
14 year old Chinese diver Quan that won the gold medal had to join the national team & get to the Olympics fast because she needed to win to get money for her mom to get treatment they couldn’t get without her winning competitions. She got 10’s multiple times. That’s pressure
And both failed to do what they were sent there to do, instead manipulating into broadcasting their own selfish ends. If we knew they lacked the heart for the world’s highest level of athletic competition, we would have gladly sent people more suited for the endeavor.
Their mental health and sports need to be separated, they don't beling in the same conversation. I don't find her sitting out events to be heroic, I don't care what she's been through, sports is about overcoming, and focus, and competing. It's not about wherever this is going.
People sitting on their sofas telling Biles what to do in a sport they've never competed. How exactly does that work 🤨. It's not a good idea pushing athletes to perform when they're not well. It left one gymnast paralyzed & cut her life short.
ENOUGH ! I believe the USA sent a TEAM, not a 'star' with backup. If the TEAM is being interviewed then 'interview the TEAM.' If things are so bad then every athlete needs to be under professional guidance.
“I’m listening to Simone and hearing her say, ‘I’m more important than this competition,’” said Patrisse Cullors, a co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement.
And they both stunk.
This is the second great article I've seen today that neglects to demonstrate the same parallels for AA men... this happens so much that no one bats an eye at it when: AA men face more incarceration & attend college at a lower rate than AA women. Imagine that level of sacrifice
Who forced them to have a million and a half followers social media? To do a docuseries? I'm sorry for them if they are not fit, withdraw like after an injury and go on
Sorry, I don't buy that this is a 'black' or women's issue. It's an elite athlete issue. There're many examples of elite athletes, male & female, of various ethnicities incl whites, whose physical/mental wellbeing are often risked & sacrificed in the name of winning & profits.
More BS
I certainly hope this puts an end to the barbaric practice of forcing these young women to represent their country in the Olympics, obviously against their will. Expecting them to overcome any issues and actually compete because that's what they signed up for is so 20th Century.
'asked to sacrifice' Nobody ASKED them to do JACKSHIT! They CHOSE it! And they're perfectly free to choose to live a mediocre life like most of the rest of the world if the pressure of being the best at what they do makes them feel icky!
