Chicago City Council members approve a new ward map for 2023, but not everyone is happy. We break down what’s changed and what hasn’t in a special LatinoVoicesWTTW BlackVoicesWTTW crossover conversation.

Mayor, Lori Lightfoot banged the gavel this week on a vote to approve a new ward map to take effect in 2023 on the question of the redistricting map for the next decade. The 43-7 vote map was enough to dodge a referendum, but some community organizations are saying the new map reflects the same old problems: no input from residents, neighborhoods carved up across ward boundaries, and borders drawn to punish political rivals.vice president Alma Krueser.

“I served on the good governance committee for Lightfoot’s transition and this was one of the issues that we brought up, about the transparency with the remapping and to me it just seems like it was kind of the same,” Butler said. “It does leave one to wonder, what caused you to decide to go against everything that you stood for in regards to transparency and community engagement in the mapping process?” van Dyk said. “Obviously this wasn’t about communities … and specifically we see the same things happening in communities that significantly engaged with the commission?”member Juan Morado Jr.

Van Dyk agreed that even more engagement with residents is needed to push back on business as usual in City Council.

Crucial Vote on Chicago Casino Delayed, As City Council Members Object to Fast TimelineEven though Lightfoot stacked a special City Council committee with her allies to consider the casino proposal, Ald. Tom Tunney (44th Ward) acknowledged Friday that the mayor did not have enough support to advance the plan to build a casino and resort. HeatherCherone Thank you for your reporting on this. Would you consider coving the voices of the local residents? How can the city push for this casino when 80% of local residents oppose? once it is approved, there is no requirement for them to incorporate local residents feedback/input. HeatherCherone The process lacks of transparency, community engagement. I am struggling to explain to my family overseas why Chicago allows such a democratic process to happen. HeatherCherone I want to invite chicagosmayor and Mr Kim to come to our neighborhood, talking to my neighbors who will be staring their casino day and night and listen to our concerns and respond to our feedback. They owe us this!!

Proposed Chicago casino could get City Council vote next week, despite complaints decision is rushedMuch of the debate at a committee hearing focused on criticism leveled by downtown Ald. Brendan Reilly, 42nd, who said the city was rushing through a decision that could increase crime and traffic. I would like to invite chicagosmayor and chicagosamir come to our neighborhood and talk to us personally. Why can’t they put the casino at McCormick? Ballys prefers that site too!! It is so anti democracy! With rising crimes in downtown, why does the city rush into a decision ? Sadly , I think it is all about the re-election. chicagosmayor want to make the budgets look better , but at what expense? Thanks to AldReilly for speaking for 85% of the residents who oppose the casino!!

Jacksonville City Council will vote on reimbursing city employees' travel for abortionsThe reimbursements would be for travel expenses to obtain medication, procedures or operations that can include the employee's 'right to plan a family, terminate a pregnancy, obtain contraceptives, and gain access to reproductive health services.' The best way to 'terminate a pregnancy' is to NOT GET pregnant in the first place. I could be wrong but I believe there are a myriad of ways and methods to have sex and not risk getting pregnant. And, I also believe almost all of those ways and methods are FREE! Let them share the fate of every registered voter. (Did the city change this position?)
