Gates also calls for a global alert system where health practitioners can send samples to a lab to get sequenced, and if the sample turns out to be highly infectious or a new pathogen, a global team of “infectious disease first responders” will be dispatched to the area. Gates predicts it will take five years to figure out how to churn out new monoclonal antibody treatments, such as the drugs from Eli Lilly and Regeneron, to quickly respond to new viruses, and hopes future diseases will benefit from advances in mRNA vaccines—but that requires the world “to double down on investments in R&D,” he wrote.“To prevent the hardship of this last year from happening again, pandemic preparedness must be taken as seriously as we take the threat of war,” Gates wrote.

The United States will do what it has done for the last 240 years. We will set this one out of mind after a few years of policy tweaks. We'll have outbreaks of various illnesses, but not a true epidemic for another 50 years. We'll get hammered then too
