New York mayor Bill de Blasio. Photo: John Lamparski/Getty Images By the end of June, New York City had experienced 227 murders in 2020, 51 more than the same period last year and consistent with an upward national trend. Like most of the experts investigating the causes, Mayor Bill de Blasio doesn’t know why this is happening. But that hasn’t stopped him from using the murders to demagogue, blaming them on alleged leniencies in the criminal-legal system and other policies that he opposes.
These were the early days of the pandemic’s tightening chokehold on the United States. Jails and prisons were becoming hot spots, as was New York City. A burgeoning crisis at Rikers Island was making it clear that, without releasing prisoners in large numbers, the jail complex risked becoming a death cage, where the impossibility of social distancing invited mass infection. De Blasio bragged about some belated releases — “the fewest detainees we’ve had in our jails since 1949,” he tweeted.
maggieNYT Been watching him from a distance for a year. He’s a joke and should never hold an office as important as his current one.
maggieNYT They are ALL crooks... ALL POLITICIANS
maggieNYT Nazi bullets killed them as they scaled the cliffs in Normandy. Trump would never join them since his bravery died at bone spurs. Oh, how we need a new “Great Generation” to protect our democracy. DumpTrump2020
“Wow, now we hate de Blasio. Turns out he was a law and order Republican all along.”
maggieNYT He has proven through the pandemic he is incapable of leadership. His 'lead your normal life' idea in March put the entire city and state at risk. Under his reign NYC I s back to the armpit of the early 90's.
maggieNYT I thought he was a radical leftist? Strikes me as more of a bootlicker
maggieNYT It's amazing to me that all of these politicians have such a hard on for putting people in jail. Every person in jail is a communal failure and costs us tax dollars in both incarceration costs and lost economic productivity. To say nothing of broken lives and families.
Maybe the police should be protecting people and not signs on the ground.
maggieNYT Pass the buck de Blasio
maggieNYT Wow must be real trouble in Gotham for the libs to criticize De bla
maggieNYT Is DeBlasio in the pocket of the Police Union? He appears to getting his talking points from them. NYCMayor NYGovCuomo nytimes MSNBC
maggieNYT So what is to blame if not for the obvious reason?
Using the Trump playbook.
maggieNYT The proof that the “more equitable” bail laws are to blame is pretty obvious when you see how many people get caught and released every day.
maggieNYT I don’t know enough about this mayor, but at first glance, he appears to have an opportunistic sleaze about him.
maggieNYT is he referring to the skyrocketing rate of Bill DeBlasio’s tweets being murdered by the ratio
De Blasio is that rare figure with an ability to unite the right and the left because, at this point, literally no one cares
