A shift in the pattern has already begun, with the jet stream no longer dipping far southward over the East like it has for much of May. Temperatures will rise across the East as the week progresses. Warmer than average temperatures will extend across much of the Midwest, Northeast and into parts of the South. Highs will climb into the 80s for most areas during the second half of the week, although some locations near the coast and in the higher elevations will top out in the 70s. Highs in much of New England and New York may return to the 70s late this week.Later this week or this weekend, several locations could reach 90 degrees for the first time this year. This includes Atlanta, which didn't hit 90 degrees until June 20 last year. Raleigh, North Carolina, and Washington D.C.
