But building a more diverse workforce is just the beginning, Hutchinson notes, as deeply ingrained traditions and norms in tech have created a code of conduct that can be inhospitable to people of color, she said.
"It might be about how people get defensive ... or that there's only way way to do things, or credentialing people, saying they can't get this position because they don't have the right degree," she says. "The rest of us, black folks especially, we've been living in this bright room for a very long time," Williams says.Well-funded tech companies have in recent days made some bold promises.
Carter of Paradigm IQ, which helps tech firms be more welcoming to people of color, finds herself more optimistic than those who roll their eyes at such pronouncements. She said the moves should be seen as more than just vows of allyship or performative stunts.
Want joining Google? Pass their test! That is simple!
srosenberg10 That’s what democrats do. Make statements. The sad part is that their voters vote according to how much they like or dislike the statements and language of politicians, rather than voting according to policy and results. The academic equality police have trained them that way.
The term black is used to refer to a company's profitability and current financial health. A company is said to be in the black if it's profitable or, more specifically, if the company produces positive earnings after accounting for all expenses. VC FUND

I am lucky enough to have always worked with a diverse team, but this makes me wonder. What's the 'correct' ratio? Relative % of population or significantly more? 3% is pretty insubstantial, but 9% seems like a reasonable representation.
Maybe they should set up a scholarship for black students who want IT degrees.
Just fire 47% of the white dudes...
It's also going to take more than hiring token POC who may not necessarily fit the job requirements just to appease diversity groups. It's going to take a fundamental shift in hiring practises, probably starting with an audit of the HR department to get the obvious racists out.
So Apple is doing a 3x better job than Google? Just 3% more and Apple will represent the American demographic for this specific special designated group! Now, they can get to work on Hispanic hiring to obtain 18%!
Sneaking suspicion this has a lot more to do with what value ur bringing to the company than anything else...
Did they discuss Facebook’s percentage?
Google and apple are Nazi racists
DEMONITIZE them.
Who's getting this telecast? We have to follow at all cost
Sounds like all the white libs complaining should quit so a black replacement can take their place.
Apple builds hardware. Google builds software. The range of jobs in hardware is at least 4x that of software. It's all about the availability of qualified workers for your range of jobs. But go ahead and be racist, NPR, it's what you're good at.
Do as I say and not as I do?🤔
Let's be clear. You cannot hire talent for the color of the skin. But companies should make sure to give equal opportunity and hire the best talent without any consideration for gender, sex orientation, culture, religion, etc...
The good jobs are always dominated by whites because they are mostly the ones doing the hiring. Racism and nepotism will always be the rule unless there is a law to stop it. Getting that law implemented is the question at hand. The people being hired don't give a damn about how.
Facebook increased its number of Black employees from 3% to 4% in 2019, with a total number of 44,942 employees. Google has committed to increasing it's minority leadership.
Let's join this Its for all people world over
I’d be curious to know also if that includes international workers, and if so...what percentage of the workers are Asian. And white too for that matter. Why not show the complete ethnic breakdown and let the whole picture speak for itself?
Is the problem hiring practices, or is it lack of access to requisite education needed for tech jobs? This is a question, not an argument.
Companies need to show us the money.
racebaiting crap
JonathanLanday Wonder how many women ?
Well POC represent a minority of the US population and also a minority of people with big tech expertise ... to accurately frame the problem don’t you need to know the number of whites versus POC that are qualified for the job.
Barking up the wrong tree. Education inaccessibility for poor people amplifies economic disparities that already exist. Underrepresentation in prestigious jobs is a symptom of a broader problem.
Hire Black. Support Black Business.
CharlieInVegas So we are advocating the return of affirmative action?
Stephe96 NPR is insufferable.
That 9% number from Apple includes their retail. NPR should do better and point that out. Strip away retail s and Apple is as bad as Google.
And how many Chinese employees (aka sweatshop slaves)?
You would think that tech companies would hire based on talent and not race. Should they really hire more people of different races to 'look' better statistically and risk sending the next billion dollar idea to another company. Corporations only care about profitability.
Ima keep an eye out on this topic for the next couple of months
Look at the pool of graduates from top universities. Maybe not funding schools with local property taxes would be a good start.
The black population is 12.1%
Why are you only reporting on black people? Why not have ALL demographic information here? This is a news site, correct?
The NFL is 60% black. What are they doing to include more Asians and other minorities?
NFL? NBA?
Yea, what's the demographic at
Ouch.... Virtue Signaling Backfire
I want real equality - but this may also come down to who applies, and who wants to work in tech. I’d also like to know how many women (as a percentage) are in tech - is it sexist if they don’t apply? I work in IT - I work with plenty people of color - but overwhelmingly men.
did they hire the most qualified people for the job? did those people that were hired show up on time and do the job asked of them? if you answer yes to both. THEN WHO GIVES A FUCK!?!?!!
Hear hear!
Now tell us how Jewish and Asian they are
Every single company around the world has a part to play in making sure that their workforce is healthy, happy, and not exclusive to one race or gender.
That’s because like 75% of their employees are foreign workers ... not even citizens ... mostly Indians.
What about NPR? Please give us breakdown, thanks
This isn’t news
Asian Americans in tech need to bring this issue up as well.
Hiring or firing people based on their color alone is racist, by definition. Content of character is a better way go to. We promise. Also, skills and ability to do the job.
Exactly, they should start hiring and firing people based on their skin color. LETS FIX RACISM TOGETHER!!!
Do you think maybe they hire the most qualified people regardless of skin color?
