“Americans should view Brittney Griner’s detention as a hostage situation,” _danigilbert, an expert on international hostage situations, told our contributor Stuart Anderson. They discussed what the U.S. can to bring Griner and Paule Whelan home.

I’m very careful about using “hostage” terminology, so I don’t come to this lightly: Americans should view Brittney Griner’s detention as a hostage situation. According to the 1979 International Convention Against the Taking of Hostages, a hostage-taking comprises an ongoing intention “in order to compel a third party . . . to do or abstain from doing any act as an explicit or implicit condition for the release of the hostage.

State-led hostage-taking, or what I’d call hostage diplomacy, intentionally makes this classification challenging. Perpetrators use their criminal justice system and the color of law to feign legitimacy, when instead they’ve turned their criminal justice apparatus into a hostage-taking enterprise. An individual hostage crisis ends when the victim is released and can return home. So, in that sense, Brittney Griner’s hostage situation will end once she’s safely back on U.S. soil.

The administration’s recent announcement that they had made Russia a “substantial offer” to bring Griner andhome helps advertise what I had assumed previously: that they are working hard behind the scenes to try to bring our citizens back. I hope that these negotiations are successful, though there’s likely to be more twists and turns ahead.

_danigilbert We need to Free every person In jail for Marijuana charges before the Gov lifts a single finger to help her.

_danigilbert I’ll agree it’s now a hostage situation as long as we also admit that it was her actions that made it possible. That said, if her “celebrity” makes it possible to get Whelan released, it might have been worth it.

_danigilbert So what are all of the people considered that are locked up in the US currently for weed?

_danigilbert If she wasn’t a celebrity this wouldn’t even been mentioned 🤔🤔

_danigilbert What should we call Americans locked up domestically for cannabis?

_danigilbert When u look at the facts 🤷🏾‍♂️ vs 🌈

_danigilbert Facts all day let’s see if BIDEN help his supporters

_danigilbert Hostage? She committed a crime in another country. She isn’t a hostage. She’s an inmate.

_danigilbert Why did she even go to Russia at bad time and brought drugs with her and now cries for help?

_danigilbert Pffft. Let her rot. There are plenty more where she came from. They will never learn anyway. Please send some more to Russia and let them break the law. How can a president of a white country, established by white Euro-americans, even interfere?

_danigilbert I see it as another distraction and our government officials are filling their own pockets and ignoring issues ordinary hard working Americans care about. We are left to fend for themselves while they destroy our country by their greed.

_danigilbert Maybe is we WITHDREW ALL AMERICANS and closed our embassies in the Soviet homeland of Trump.

_danigilbert Legalize marijuana and pardon all those charged with an offence related to Marijuana.

_danigilbert If she possessed hash when she was arrested, and she admitted she did but made a mistake, then Biden needs to pardon every person in US Federal Prisons who likewise are being held hostage by the United States of America.

_danigilbert Intersectionality used by U.S. gov't to determine who is worth bringing home. Famous black woman lesbian athlete= pull out all stops White male= let rot in jail, no problem

_danigilbert Why would we want to trade a Drug smuggling women back to the U.S to be honest it fine with me that she can stay there in prison, she needs to learn smuggling drugs is illegal.

_danigilbert Nonsense. While the sentence was ridiculous she did break their laws and she shouldn’t be above paying a price.

_danigilbert It’s absolutely insane if you think that criminal charges are a “hostage situation”. Tell us you’re pushing a narrative without telling us.

_danigilbert Free US prisoners locked up in the US first. She expressed her deep disdain for everything American while she was enjoying the freedoms of America. Now, she'll get a taste of communist culture. Maybe she'll discontinue the dumba$$ antics.

_danigilbert And if a Russian is detained at the New York airport with marijuana! His arrest should be considered by us as hostage-taking!?

_danigilbert If this were a regular American, no one would be talking about it. Not to mention that US prisons are full of people guilty of drug possession. The hype surrounding all this is insane.

_danigilbert Someone should send her some vape pens. 9yrs is a long time to go without her glaucoma medication!
