New survey data shows employees value financial wellness benefits more than extra vacation days and in-office perks. Kristen Carlisle, General Manager of Betterment's 401(k) business, discusses the trend and shares questions employees should ask to understand and utilize those benefits.

Although the pandemic has presented a huge variety of challenges, it’s clear that it’s had one positive lasting impact – financial wellness has truly become a top priority for people.”She recommends that employers talk to their employees regularly about their financial benefits they offer and to tailor the messaging to their employee population.

She stresses that financial wellness benefits can help with employee retention and talent acquisition. She adds that helping employees better understand how to take advantage of those can make a big difference in their happiness and morale. For employees, asking the right questions can help you take full advantage of your financial benefits. Carlisle recommends the following:Is there a vesting schedule for 401?

What types of non-retirement financial benefits do you offer? For example, an employer sponsored emergency fund, student loan repayment benefits, a wellness stipend, FSA or HSA? Beyond my base salary, what other financial compensation can I roughly expect to receive from the benefits offered? Making a point to regularly review your financial wellness benefits and the progress you’re making can be a helpful way to stay motivated and engaged while helping you plan for the future.
