The 2019 Tour de France champion produced impressive acceleration inside the last km of a gravel road final section to beat Italian Giulio Ciccone and Russian Aleksandr Vlasov, who were second and third respectively seven seconds behind.
Colombian Bernal, perfectly set up by his Ineos-Grenadiers team mate Gianni Moscon's infernal pace in the finale, whizzed past France's Geoffrey Bouchard and Dutchman Keen Bouwman 300 metres from the line and never looked back. "I can't believe what's happening," a tearful Bernal said following his first stage win at a grand tour at the end of the 158-km ride from Castel di Sangro. "I didn't expect to be here in that position after the Tour last year."
Vlasov is third, 21 seconds off the pace, with Ciccone, who appears to be becoming Trek Segafredo's team leader as double champion Vincenzo Nibali continues to struggle, a further 15 seconds back. While the gaps are still small after nine stages, Bernal has been looking a cut above the rest of the field.

That's cheating, surely?
And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire— 48 where ‘Their worm does not die And the fire is not quenched.’ —JESUS
