By scientific definition, a springy element—whether a metal coil or resilient foam—does nothing on its own. It’s only when it is loaded and unloaded—in this case from a runner’s stride—that it can return some of the energy of that original force. Kipchoge and Kosgei’s shoes can only put out the energy they put in. The same is true for runners trying to break 3, 4, or 5 hours in the marathon.
Meanwhile, Jan Frodeno wore a similar pair of ASICS prototypes while splitting a 2:42:43 marathon on his way to winning the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, several hours after Kipchoge ran his historic feat halfway across the world. ASICS won’t give up any details about the shoe yet , but it’s believed to be built from a similar design ethos as the brand's efficiency-enhancing Metaride and Glideride models that debuted in 2019.
Hoka One One was the first brand to follow Nike’s lead and unveil carbon-fiber shoes when it launched the low-profile Carbon Rocket last fall. Cam Levins wore them and shattered the 43-year-old Canadian marathon record, running a 2:09:25 in his debut at the distance at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in October. American Scott Fauble wore them in April when he placed seventh in the Boston Marathon in 2:09:09, making him the 11th-fastest American ever.
Same goes for Saucony, which has also had experimental shoes with carbon-fiber plates in the works for more than two years. In May, Parker Stinson wore a prototype of that shoe en route to winning the U.S. 25K championships in a new American record time of 1:13:47.
brianmetzler I ran super spartan race in old beat up Nike running shoes I got from rack room shoes at $60. Pretty sure progress is made with the right willpower and spirit of the runner.
brianmetzler Progress isn't going to be done by Nike. Look around, others are making the progress.
brianmetzler Ridiculously expensive, I’ll stick to Brooksrunninguk
brianmetzler I have a pair of the 4%. I ran 2% slower in Boston this year than I did my previous NY Marathon and 2% slower in Staten Island (half) than I did Brooklyn Half earlier this year. So..
