Ruben Moreno appears in court for a bond hearing Wednesday, May 25, 2022 in Houston. Moreno is charged with capital murder in the death of Melanie Mendoza, the 8-year-old daughter of his girlfriend. The child and her twin sister, who have the birth defect Microcephaly, were allegedly abused by Moreno and their mother, Soledad Mendoza. A total bond of $3 million was set, on three different charges, in the case.
Melanie died Dec. 21, 2020, after being rushed to a hospital for nausea and losing consciousness. Court records show that Moreno is to be kept separate from his girlfriend, Soledad Mendoza, the mother of the twin girls, in the Harris County Jail. The two started dating in 2020 after she and her children moved to Houston from San Antonio.
