- Imagine what it’s like to be flung to the floor by a gigantic explosion, dodge a falling wardrobe in your home, be cut in the forehead by flying glass - and then brush off the blood and start filming the news.

“I was lying on the ground, and all I could hear was the sirens of the car alarms,” said Basma, who had taken a day off work on Tuesday. “I thought, I don’t want to die.”Bleeding from a gash in her head, with wet hair and hastily dressed, Basma rushed into the street and began filming with the only camera she had at hand - her smartphone.

“Everything was down, the neighbours were shouting, the kids were crying,” said Basma. “All you could hear was the sound of cars driving on smashed glass.”As journalists, we typically document and observe through a lens or behind a notebook. But this week, our colleagues in the Reuters Beirut bureau, our regional headquarters, were catapulted into the news even as they rushed to cover it. Several spent hours on the streets, while their families at home were injured and in shock.

Photographer Mohamed Azakir thought it was an earthquake when he first felt the ground shaking. When he reached the port area, there were bodies everywhere. He saw a man pinned from the torso downwards under a car, covered in dirt and blood. Azakir thought the man was dead, but he opened his eyes and waved his arms when the photographer approached.reut.

“Are you OK?” screamed Bureau Chief Tom Perry, who had also sought refuge under the desk. He too tried alerting editors, and calling his wife and son. “We need to get out of here.”

Well this story is just screaming fucking bullshit

Right place. Right time. 😳

Very brave lady.

And then, obviously, you doubled her salary. Right? Right?

I'd be more afraid of breaking my arm whilst patting myself on the back. She only did what hundreds of thousands of others did.

What a job 🤯

Every journalist dreams about such an opportunity 🤣

Well that was pretty stupid, in a case like that you might want to seek medical care before heading back to the front lines

Underground tunnels found under the port, indicating human trafficking of children activities...Like this in the US.

bad taste

So, bless them. But where is the news?

rayos ;S

No need to escape as there was no a terrorist attack!

the magnitude of the blast from the explosion is insane.

On a positive note, TVs still work! 😐

A. It’s a suspended ceiling. The “chunks of the ceiling” while not pleasant would not injure her. B. How do you have time to get under your desk to protect yourself from an explosion? Gotta love it when news organizations try to make themselves part of the story.

Our hearts go out to the people of Beirut. There’s no reason for such things to happen, if we can just recover our sense of obligation to each other. Swift recovery!

Nabal's wife

Thank God no one was hurt there. Heart goes out to all those who weren't as lucky & their families. 💔

Journalists are trash good they suffered

Just horrible. Hope they are all safe.

It’s heartbreaking , in few seconds life become up side down. hopefully bierut will rise again soon.

🤷🤔

You don’t have to imagine. You can see it.

I imagine people who died.

Imagine living in the middle east: one day you have a home, second no., one day you have money in the bank, second no, one day you express yourself second you are arrested!!

imagine dying because corporations don't want to pay for the work involved in proper storage of dangerous materials

Alright. Whatever.
