Ayanna Pressley Wasn't Having Betsy DeVos Compare Abortion to Slavery

Representative Ayanna Pressly challenged Secretary Betsy DeVos’s claim that being pro-choice is similar to being pro-slavery. In a brief note addressed to DeVos, posted to Twitter on Thursday, the first-term congresswoman and "Squad" member had stern words for the woman running President Donald Trump’s Department of Education.

"He, too, contended with the 'pro-choice' arguments of his day," DeVos said in remarks the Department of Education provided to Politico. "They suggested that a state’s 'choice' to be slave or to be free had no moral question in it." DeVos went on to call advocates for slavery "pro-choicers." "Lincoln was right about the slavery 'choice' then, and he would be right about the life 'choice' today," she continued. "Because, as it’s been said: Freedom is not about doing what we want; freedom is about having the right to do what we ought."reporting the remarks. She challenged DeVos to come visit her for an educational conversation.

"Dear Betsy," Pressley wrote. "As a Black woman & the Chair of the abortion access task force, I invite you to come by the Hill and say this to my face. Would welcome the opportunity to educate you.""The rhetoric & policies of anti choice zealots like DeVos put the lives & bodily autonomy of far too many people at risk," Pressley continued, before highlighting some key policy proposals that could do just that.

"EACH" is the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance Act, legislation that seeks to make abortions more affordable.

Abortion is slavery.
