“There are many people who want him to engage in a political agenda,” Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said at the hearing. “I think that will not be his priority. His priority is first the investigation of the Jan. 6 mob invasion of this Capitol.” Garland said he would provide prosecutors with more resources in the Capitol riot investigation and also broaden its scope to cover the origins of domestic terrorism.
“I intend to make sure we look more broadly to look at where this is coming from, what other groups there might be that could raise the same problems in the future,” he said.Garland, whose Supreme Court nomination was blocked by Republicans in 2016, is widely expected to win confirmation for attorney general with bipartisan backing. His nomination has gained support from more than 150 former Justice Department officials on both sides of the aisle.
