The coronavirus pandemic is devastating rural hospitals, including the tiny 25-bed facility in Memphis, Missouri. The situation is so dire that doctors sometimes have to send infected people home, telling them to come back if their condition worsens.

Dr. Shane Wilson kneels at the bedside of a patient suffering from COVID-19 inside Scotland County Hospital on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2020, in Memphis, Mo. Wilson grew up in the area and personally knows many of the patients he is treating. "We have a really strong community. Very small. We're all friends and neighbors,'' Wilson said.

He visits a woman who used to be a gym teacher at his school, and later laughingly recalls a day she caught him smoking at school and made him and a friend pick up cigarette butts as punishment. Another man was in the middle of his soybean harvest when he fell ill and couldn’t finish. In November, Wilson treated his own father, who along with his wife used to work at the same hospital. The 74-year-old elder Wilson recovered from the virus.

Not now. The small hospital with roughly six doctors and 75 nurses among 142 full-time staff, is in crisis. The region is seeing a big increase in COVID-19 cases, and all available beds are usually taken. “We spend our time indoors taking care of these very sick people, and then we go outdoors and hear people tell us the disease is a hoax or it doesn’t really exist,” Guffey said.At 68, Cowell still works his 500-acre farm near Memphis and is healthy enough that he takes no daily pills. He started feeling poorly around Nov. 11, tested positive four days later, then gradually got sicker. On Nov. 18, an ambulance took him to the emergency room. He was treated and went home.

Brock Slabach, senior vice president of the National Rural Health Association, based in suburban Kansas City, said it takes “space, staff and stuff” to run a rural hospital. “If you don’t have any one of those three, you’re really hamstrung,” he said, noting that many hospitals face shortages in all three areas.

Put a MAGA hat on them and send them home.

And GovParsonMO is just sitting there doing nothing. You don’t have to tell people what they do or who they bring into their homes, but you can do a mask mandate for public places.

Heck, they've been doing that since the beginning in Central Tx.

That’s how it should be done regardless! Many Covid patients are being kept in the hospitals needlessly! I’m sure it helps the hospital’s bottom line!

That’s heartbreaking

This literally happens everywhere. A positive test doesn’t equal a hospital stay. Sheesh.

That's a tragic scene.

Missouri supported and voted for trump and the Republicans. Possibly they don't believe that the virus is very deadly and contagious.

Missouri wouldn’t be in this situation if we had a decent Governor.

Working an ICU contract in SD. Small facility in a 14K town. 5/6 ICU Pt’s are COVID. 2/6 will probably survive. 2/6 will take weeks to die. Overheard after 13 hour shift, how the medical profession is not doing anything to “cure” COVID

It's so sad to believe that all of this could've been avoided with a national message of prevention and safety. The lives of these patients lie within the hands of every person who turned this health crisis into a political chess match.

Omg so dire

realDonaldTrump , any advice how these Drs and nurses can find time during a devastating Pandemic to golf nearly every day? I can’t wait to see you get out of the big White House that you do not deserve .

Doctors do just that even when the situation is not 'so dire'. I know people who were infected that the hospital sent home when there was no prospect of the hospital being overwhelmed.

🙏🏽

Sounds ideal. Go home and monitor symptoms to see if they get worse. what the fuck are people looking for

Why didn't anybody warn them? 🙄

Cool. Let’s rachet up the fear with a small town...lol

Too many deniers and MagicJesus worshipers. It should be a crime to deny COVID19 and climatechange facts

It won’t be Santa who’s coming to town thanks to Trump

Telling people that this virus isn't much worse than the flu, or only noting the fatality rate is criminally reckless. People aren't able to get the hospital care they need, and people suffer permanent lung and brain damage because of it. The US has handled this SO poorly.

it's a hoax and the election was a fraud and Trump won bigly. imagine that half of America thinks this way 🙁

Rejecting all Republicans would help relieve the pressure of over crowded hospitals!

HawleyMO RoyBlunt GovParsonMO how about you do something productive while our state continues to make the news for terrible reasons

This is serious

Was someone looking for deep dive subjects recently, gummibear737?

Heartbreaking

Yea, these red state anti-science policies are going GREAT.

So much Winning

Coming from a State in Australia that is coming out of our 2nd wave,0 cases for 30 days, I know the C19 experience. We had a curfew, masks, restrictions on hospitality and retail, these actions work,no miracles, low cost, major benefits.I get the issues, I implore you do similar.
