Astros lose to Red Sox after a bad injury, rain delay and bullpen bludgeoning

Boston Red Sox's Matt Barnes follows through on a pitch against the Houston Astros in the seventh inning of a baseball game, Monday, May 16, 2022, in Boston. BOSTON — Thunderstorms forced the Astros to prolong their pitiful night. They witnessed a teammate’s terrible injury before it began. After the rain subsided, the stadium crowd shrunk and the bullpen door swung open, one of this club’s most trusted groups gave a game away.

Kiké Hernández and J.D. Martinez mashed doubles before Bogaerts bludgeoned a poorly located fastball for a two-run home run. Houston mustered nothing against sidearming lefthander Matt Strahm, who struck out three across 1 ⅔ stabilizing innings from Boston’s bullpen. The shaggy southpaw yielded one hit — Chas McCormick’s ringing two-out double during the eighth — but struck out catcher Jason Castro to end the threat.

Castro’s strikeout only prolonged a fruitless night. Houston’s lineup stranded eight baserunners and finished 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez punched out in a frustrating first inning against Red Sox starter Garrett Whitlock.
