Tras una década de préstamos asequibles, China empieza a restringir sus préstamos a países latinoamericanos en medio de una pandemia que ha afectado al gigante asiático y a la capacidad de pago de sus deudores

En 2010 la economía china prosperaba y las empresas estatales buscaban formas de expandirse a nivel internacional. Beijing dirigió su atención sobre Latinoamérica, una región falta de capital pero rica en recursos naturales de los que carecía el gigante asiático. El resultado: un récord de 35.000 millones de dólares en préstamos entre estaos ese año.

La creciente influencia económica y diplomática de China en la región ha preocupado a legisladores estadounidenses, que no han sabido frenar su ascenso. La tarea recae ahora en el gobierno de Joe Biden, que ha señalado a la presencia china en la región como una amenaza para la seguridad nacional. Pero después de que China sustituya a Estados Unidos como principal socio comercial de varios países suramericanos, reducir la brecha no será fácil.

China ha acusado el golpe de las dificultades de sus deudores. Ecuador negoció el año pasado para aplazar un año casi 900 millones de dólares en pagos de deuda con entregas de petróleo. Se cree que Venezuela, de lejos el mayor deudor de la región, ha obtenido un aplazamiento similar. El China Development Bank y el Ministerio chino de Exteriores no respondieron a preguntas sobre el motivo del descenso en préstamos a Latinoamérica.
