The U.S. has fallen behind its vaccine distribution goals.

to Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar that hospitals “have seen a number of barriers to smooth and effective vaccinations” that threaten the likelihood of the U.S. achieving herd immunity this year.

Hospitals have observed issues with communication especially, Pollack wrote, saying it is “unclear who is responsible for answering questions” about the vaccine rollout. He called on the government to offer U.S. hospitals more support, guidance and updates on best practices when it comes to effectively distributing vaccines, as well as to be more transparent about their process.

According to Pollack, 64 separate vaccination plans have been developed by states, several major U.S. cities, and other jurisdictions—and it’s still unclear if HHS has assessed those plans to determine if they are capable of achieving the federal government's goal of vaccinating hundreds of millions of Americans by spring, he wrote.

Pollack suggested that the HHS hold regular briefing calls for vaccine distribution, like was done with the national rollout ofOn Wednesday, the HHS announced the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would shell out more than $22 billion to aid states and other local jurisdictions’ vaccination programs.“Effective vaccines, if administered properly to enough Americans, can tame this awful virus and halt the devastating impact it has had on the country.
