As omicron wreaks havoc across college hoops, coaches and commissioners alike are having to adapt | ChuckCarltonDMN

Texas Tech forward Bryson Williams is fouled by Iowa State guard Caleb Grill while driving to the basket during the second half of an NCAA college basketball game, Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2022, in Ames, Iowa. With a bench reduced to exactly two scholarship players this week at Iowa State, first-year Texas Tech basketball coach Mark Adams had to improvise.

“As we typically do, the [Division I] men’s and women’s basketball committees will track on player and coach availability via the conference monitoring program, which is an invaluable part of the evaluation process for both championships,” the statement read. “Losses are still losses, and wins are still wins, but we will continue taking into consideration the absence of a coach or players, whether they are COVID-related or due to injury or suspension.

“Thank gosh for the last 18 months because we’re now a lot better prepared to deal with what we’re dealing with right now,” Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said. “We’ve had to pivot previously, we’ve had to put testing protocols in place and we’ve had to have minimum thresholds for participation. Most of that is not new and we’ve been able to pivot to it a little more efficiently.”

“We’re hoping we’ll have a little more depth [Saturday] against Kansas so we can have a little more flexibility with the offense.”
