The Navajo Nation has seen its number of coronavirus cases multiply rapidly. Tribal leaders say they desperately need more resources to address the crisis — but the biggest problem may be a lack of running water. 40% of the reservation doesn't have it.

The Navajo Nation also lacks enough health care workers, hospital beds and other equipment needed to address the crisis. Under normal circumstances, there are about 400 hospital beds for 170,000 people. So many patients have been flown to hospitals in border towns. Council delegate Amber Kanazbah Crotty says the Indian Health Service was lacking resources before the virus.

The number of coronavirus cases on the Navajo Nation is multiplying rapidly. As of April 3, there areand eight confirmed deaths. The CDC says Native Americans are some of the most vulnerable to the coronavirus because of economic, geographic, and health conditions. With public officials raising the alarm parents and kids have been under a lot of stress. For families like Adrian Lerma's, she, her husband and seven kids have been avoiding social media lately. Instead, they're returning to their traditions of telling stories — stories of survival and resilience.

alexisgoldstein This is a sad situation

jentaub It's unusual how calamities and disasters are increasing in the world. It seems that the world is being punished because of its silence towards the slaughtering of the innocent oppressed people. This unpleasant situation will be corrected by the Divine Savior. ThePromisedSaviour

You can donate to DigDeepH2O to help bring running water to these families in need.

TRULY A GOOD STORY WITH LEGS, BUT DOES NPR HAVE THE BALLS TO WALK IT ?! DIG DEEP, ASK THE PRESIDENT, ASK THE GOVERNORS, ASK THE LOCAL POLITICANS IN THAT AREA....

repairrestores1 I feel sorry for the native Americans who seem to always get crapped on by the government. Trump doesn't care about them or anyone else in this country I'm ashamed of our government for the things they have done and continue to do.

These are the populations that will suffer the most, including the homeless and the American Indians

Everyone freaking out like we haven’t been advocating for these issues for the last eternity and they’re just now hearing about it 🤦🏻‍♀️

'Running water, it would be such a luxury.' Legena Wagner’s family drives 45 minutes to fill water containers at a windmill pump on Navajo Nation. More than 2 million Americans do not have running water.

FrankWaln 🙏🏽❤️

NavajoNation Tragic and shameful for America not to care for their Native Americans, they are the true Americans, pushed on fringes and deprived of their rights, lands, decent living. May this crisis teach us the lesson of caring for each one of us, Love

😤

dunneteach America, this is seriously inexcusable in the 21st Century!

TheRaDR WTF?!?

SanchezMaree Over 100 fu*king years since running water has been available and Native Americans still don't have running water. Shame on the country, shame on us for letting the government continue to hurt these people.

GratefulDog What a damn shame! This isn’t right! I know it to be true because I’ve visited people on the reservations in the past. Outhouses for bathrooms, no running water! Idk it’s so frustrating seeing so many injustices in this United States of America! I’ll vote and pray! Bernie2020 ❤️

Map made by LucasBrownEyes illustrates the widespread problem of no access to running water amongst Indigenous People

During my decade on the Navajo reservation we prepped meds to be airlifted with food to remote ranches (they all are) when snow & mud made driving impossible. Water & Firewood, families do their best. This is America in 2020. About 50% have no electricity or running water. 2020

Amen! God help us!

That is horrific.

RollXd6 The spittle when talking; don't talk at people.

So, , that's a story you might consider pursuing: Why, in the 21st century has Interior done so little to help the Navajo Nation provided water to its people? The US has a trust relationship with tribal nations. Neglect of any tribal nation's basic needs is appalling.

Welcome to the almighty U.S., we have to be proud that the wealthiest nation in the world has indigent people who lack running water, homelessness, and limited access to healthcare for many. No, not Trump’s fault, not Obama’s, either.

The treatment of the indigenous is a global issue. So proud of New Zealand, whilst not perfect the indigenous help shape law. Their rights & interests as custodians of land & sea are protected. There is much to learn from cultures that work with the environment.

SO WHAT IS THE STATE DOING ABOUT THAT ?

Yeah, it's the elimination of the undesirable. And the native Americans have been getting it since the polio blankets back in the day. My great grandmother was Cherokee. I used to love to go visit and hear her stories. She's passed now. I think the way they're treated is wrong.

Maybe we can't get running water there but can't we get water there at least? In the safest most sanitary way of course.

Pass this on. ACTION NOW!!!!

This is why most people of color whether they are black, latino, native america, asian, middle eastern, pacific islander will NEVER support GOP policy. They always bear the brunt of the government's incompetence

This is unacceptable, BettyMcCollum04 again, this is in your wheel house chairwoman.

No running water Good grief I truly believed we were way past that? Why

Too bad the feds would rather build an oil pipeline instead of a water pipeline.

Wait, it took a pandemic for them to realize not having running water was a problem?

This is so sad & infuriating. Bless the mom for telling her kids stories of resilience but in reality that is not going to protect her people. We should do so much better for them.

Ah, a group of people Trumpers care about as much as they care about Puerto Rico.

Native Americans should live like royalty to the end of their days

Always the forgotten ones

In US. No running water, in US. Richest country ever and NO RUNNING WATER! Our priorities have been to oppress. It’s disgusting. I’m disappointed in you America. Vote true change. BernieSanders Bernie2020 BernieOrBust2020

😔 I’m so sorry.

Burying the lede, I see

😭

The reservation by my house closed itself off from the outside today at 5pm. 30 day lockdown. 12 cases of covid-19 there so far. Very worried for my students that live there. I hope they are all safe and well. Definitely calling them Monday!

🥵

They should sue BLM, ExxonMobil, Chesapeake Energy & the Trump administration.. StopFracking Trumpdemic

TempestWilliams , this should cause alarm for us. I know these people are dear to you.

We — as a nation — really need to make reparations to our native tribes.

🥺🥺🥺

this is terrible, I feel for those folks.

Still competing for the VP spot NikkiHaley ?

What in the world are you even talking about npr?

Government won't help them, best to look into verified charities and other organizations hoping they can help.

40% with no running water? what fucking country is this?

BoulderFezfrog This is horrible.

Terrilltf The governments need to respond ASAP 💕🙏

GottaLaff It is now the 21st Century. Running water SHOULD NOT be an issue. Native American/First Nation People deserve better than this

chick_in_kiev Indigenous genocide?

I wondered how indigenouspeople were fairing during COVID19 ...😔

The collective numbers of First Nations, Indigenous, Peoples, Natives of America (Alaska, Hawaii, Mainland USA, Puerto Rico, Marshall Islands, Samoa) Are under 9 million in total. These ARE ENDANGERED people That is 2.7% of The US population They need our immediate assistance

Sifill_LDF 💔

Sifill_LDF Trump administration is literally repeating what Columbus did with smallpox. There is no opportunity for villainy they do not take.

THAT'S INTERESTING.... GOOD FIND.....SO OF ALL THE DUMB QUESTIONS ASKED TO THE PRESIDENT WHY WAS THIS QUESTION NOT RAISED TO HIM IN A PRESS CONFERENCE?

We are an evil nation.

wow. . didn’t know that

I keep flashing on Planet Money! 4 or 5 weeks ago, they told us that 3M was a good stock to buy! Now we get to watch as they count the Dead! Neoliberalism!

This is a travesty.

these sovereign nations need to do a better job for their people if 40% don't have running water. maybe it's time for the USA to eliminate the under performing self governing reservations and bring them into the 21st century. no one should have to live like that!

It’s shameful that they don’t have running water or medical supplies. The response from this administration is disgraceful.

wormmaps Ppl don't even realize what's going on in the northern isolated areas, do they?

Maybe it is time to leave the reservation and join the modern world?

Elizabeth Warren should get the government involved that seemed to have worked well in the past

Who's been stopping them from getting it?

Navajo’s were around for hundreds (maybe thousands) of years before The US. Navajo Nation was created in 1868. ONE HUNDRED and FIFTY-TWO YEARS AGO. If you can’t figure out running water living right next to the most advanced civilization on earth, look inward. Pathetic.

As Navajo Nation enforces coronavirus curfew, Arizona sends in the National GuardOverwhelmed by the spread of coronavirus and fearing it could ravage a population already grappling with insufficient health care and generational poverty, the Navajo Nation has secured the help of FEMA and the Arizona National Guard.
