“You guys are asking ‘Where do I go?’ and I don’t have an answer for you,” Ms. Perez told Ms. Contreras. “But I know the process is going to continue.”

Cities nationwide are grappling with how to respond to homelessness after the coronavirus pandemic. This rapidly growing city of nearly 1 million has an estimated 3,160 people experiencing homelessness, according to an estimate by the Ending Community Homelessness Coalition, a nonprofit that serves as the lead agency for homeless services in the Austin area.

Austin City Council members voted in 2019 to rescind a longtime city ban on sitting or sleeping in public, following testimony, mostly from homeless people and advocates, on its impact. One man spoke of a friend who had been killed when, sleeping in a tunnel to keep from being cited, she was swept away in a flood. Others said citations made it more difficult to work out of homelessness.

Homelessness is a result of the greed of the rich.

Isn’t Austin also booming with new jobs?

It’s sad when US sending billions of dollars aid abroad and can’t even help and fix dire situations of its own citizens. Why can’t govt build more houses and make it affordable.

在富裕的美国,还有大量的流浪者????? 实在是美国一大特色😉

‘Crackdown’ is for crime and corruption. Being homeless is not a crime. Matt 25:40.

Stop giving them free stuff and they will go back to California on their own.

Will the government subsidize building decent apartments for the homeless to move in & transfer ownership to the occupants? Will the government spare no pains to create prosperous industries for them to find jobs and lift them out of poverty? No, it likes destroying better.

to those blaming the GOP. There are high homeless rates in SF, LA, Seattle, Portland and NYC. ALL RAN BY DEMOCRATS!! Stop the blame game and come up with actual solutions besides just giving them homes. that won't solve the problem.

I can't read w/o paid subscription, but surely they plan to simply move them to a better location?

Same happened in Toronto. We need better solutions.

GregAbbott_TX compartmentalizes human suffering. He’s about to have more homeless as he kicks the unemployed off unemployment tmrw. He thinks Texans are lazy but he’s cool with Texas tax dollars going to NY to continue to pay their unemployment.

Texas...the black point in America

Homelessness was made a crime during Jim crow era. I wonder why.

Simple solution: GIVE THEM HOMES Anything else is just a bad rabid-rightwing joke.

They’ve made being homeless against the law. It’s barbaric. Liberal city my anus. Capital united to punish those who have fallen.

horrible

abbothateshomeless

Just in time for an end to the eviction moratorium. What could possibly go wrong?

You can blame Greg Abbott and the GQP for that!

Don't worry, joerogan and his Hollywood celebrity friends are there now. They'll fix it!

Are they doing something illegal - that necessities crackdown?

Debated for two years! Texas hasn't any idea for helping your poor poeple? What to do about them? Anything gives to them, food, house, and job. The first, homeless need a healthy life.

shameful

dont worry......Biden and the Democrats will fix it.....problem obviously caused by the biggest threat to the US....White Supremacy!

thanks
