There's an art to it & maybe US driving tests are weak. I remember mine in Virginia years ago was pathetic. I past but failed my British test dismally.

When I lived in NYC I could get a twelve foot car into a ten foot space. It was a survival skill lost the moment I moved to a small city in the intermountain West.
I remember my driving instructor teaching me his simple 4-step process for parallel parking. Still works perfectly to this day. Had a co-worker tell me one day, 'My god, that's the best parallel parking I've ever seen anyone do!'
