'Rank and file Democrats are so invested in the imperative to defeat Donald Trump they may well be willing to ignore the issues that likely kept Bloomberg out of the race at the outset,' writes Joe Lockhart, a former WH press secretary, for CNNOpinion

Joe Lockhart was White House press secretary from 1998-2000 in President Bill Clinton's administration. He co-hosts the podcast "Words Matter." The opinions expressed in this commentary are his own. View more opinion at CNN.

Michael Bloomberg has wanted to be President of the United States for a long time. He toyed with the idea both in 2008 and 2016. But as a shrewd data-driven political leader, Bloomberg must have had a difficult time seeing a path to winning the Democratic nomination. That is, until now. Joe LockhartWith the lackluster performance of the original frontrunner, former Vice President Joe Biden, and the Democratic establishment's unease with Sen. Bernie Sanders, Bloomberg jumped into the lane opening up in the 2020 race, focusing on the Super Tuesday primaries in March. But I suspect the most compelling reason Bloomberg made his decision to jump in was not the rest of the Democratic field, but one person who defines American politics today -- President Donald J. Trump.

Dems fear grueling primary could boost TrumpDemocrats are settling in for a long and brutal presidential primary season that could conclude at the DNC in July, raising fears that five more months of party infighting could boost the prospects of President Trump Another perfect rendition of Republican talking points from Politico's crew of hacks and scribblers. Did you just write this or dig it up from 2016? Only 2 states - mostly white - have voted. The media need to dial back the hysteria until after Super Tuesday. Creating the 'narrative' are you?

Donald Trump backed 'total racist' Mike Bloomberg's stop-and-frisk policy at 2016 election debateThe president said the ex-New York City mayor's stop-and-frisk approach to gun crime was 'tremendous beyond belief' when he went head-to-head with Hillary Clinton. It’s only racist by insane Liberal standards. In the tape recording Bloomberg merely cited crime statistics...Trump knows this but will still use it to turn crazy Democratic voters against moderate candidates. The POLICY, as do I, NOT Bloomberg's racist remarks corrupt Newsweak... If you think Trump has firm opinions on any issue just wait a minute....
