Nitrification occurs below the photic zone in the oceanic water column. But thus far, it was believed not to be possible in anoxic zones. A new Science paper changes that possibility. Learn more in a new SciencePerspective:

The single-cell organism can self-produce oxygen for ammonia oxidation

Nitrosopumilus maritimus, under anoxic conditions, produces O2for ammonia oxidation by itself while simultaneously reducing nitrite to nitrous oxide (N2O) and dinitrogen (N2). These results provide a possible explanation for the presence of AOA in marine oxygen minimum zones, where they may have an important role in nitrogen loss. The findings may further have implications for the evolution of the nitrogen cycle on Earth.

Microbes in The Ocean Depths Can Make Oxygen Without Sun. This Discovery Could Be HugeFor most of life on Earth, oxygen is essential, and sunlight is usually needed to produce that oxygen. But in an exciting twist, researchers have caught a common, ocean-dwelling microbe breaking all the rules.

Mesquite Man Killed In Oxygen Tank Explosion That Sparked Apartment Fire, Injured FirefighterA man has been killed in a late-night oxygen tank explosion that sparked an apartment fire and injured a firefighter in Mesquite.

Mesquite FD: Deadly apartment fire likely caused by firefighters’ exploding oxygen tankSomething sparked a fire department oxygen tank, setting off a fast-moving fire that led to one man's death and a Mesquite firefighter's second-degree burns. The apartment building was also destroyed and several people lost their homes.

A WC/WO star exploding within an expanding carbon–oxygen–neon nebula - NatureObservations of the supernova SN 2019hgp, identified about a day after its explosion, show that it occurred within a nebula of carbon, oxygen and neon, and was probably the explosion of a massive WC/WO star. I remember working with these gorgeous stars in my undergrad. Fantastic news to witness this :D.

Shawn Bradley, Paralyzed in a Bike Crash: ‘I Don’t Know How I Can Ease the Burden of Me’Shawn Bradley's legacy, at 7'6', is of a shot-blocking NBA giant.
