. But having tried the repair process, I actually can’t recommend it at all — and I have a sneaking suspicion that Apple likes it that way.
I lugged those cases onto a BART train to San Francisco and dragged them down the streets to our office. Then, I set everything out on a table and got started.Step one of opening an iPhone is, basically, using a hefty machine to suck the screen off the top. Here, I wasn’tto loosen the Apple goop holding my screen down.
The manual pictures a technician holding the screen with one hand while cutting adhesive with the other, but I also had to hold the tray to keep it from sliding around.Apple also provides a set of fancy torque drivers to make sure you don’t screw down the phone’s tiny screws too tightly, but it’s a bit of a chore.
When it finally lay open on the table, I couldn’t help but gawk in wonder at my iPhone 13 Mini’s precisely packed guts, and I realized I was having fun! Slicing open my phone was a thrill. But a lot of that thrill came from not knowing whether my phone would survive surgery — Apple tools or no.From there, it was time to swap out the battery.
Was author expecting similar weighting tools as battery to repair ? you can always use less heavy non apple tools to repair it.
apple 'good design' choices..
goodluck fixing that expensive phone! lol..
Biggest problem with this article was when the author writes “the more I think about it”. The issue with most Verge articles is the lack of thinking, which is the case here. Sad that the Verge is so predictably negative.
If you want a phone you can repair, the Fairphone 4 5G is a great device. Respectable specs and performance, 5 year warranty and parts easy to replace. Appreciate it's not available everywhere though. It's a desktop and laptop too - here accessing vmwarehorizon Windows 365.
I can't believe you got my defending apple but holy shit The Verge sucks. You guys are a nuisance to right to repair.
The most surprising thing here is the three ring binder manual! This is sort of in right direction, but the initial design needs to make this process more seamless and environmentally friendly. You shouldn’t need all this crap to change your freaking🔋 that barely lasts 2 yrs.
I can’t believe I need a 12 pound hand drill to fix my car
Verge so incompetent, it's upturned the universe
Im new plz follow me
The right to repair is elementary if we want to live in a selfsustaining environment...
This is what tools Verge expects to arrive next time they apply for a liquid damage repair.
Apple service providers don't even have these, 😂
THE VERGE DOES NOT SPEAK FOR THE RIGHT TO REPAIR COMMUNITY. An OPTIONAL tool to make things easier is not a downside, it's an advantage FFS. When you change a car's tire, you have the freedom to NOT use a Jack (good luck). So now when it is given you complain that it's heavy!?
Ok
apple apologists up in here are on some hardcore denial bs
People should just start renting these repair kits from them and then immediately returning them. Make them burn tens of millions on the shipping cost so that maybe they'll reconsider.
This is a lighter fix 🤣
😂🙈
Just use Fairphone
Clickbait after clickbait.
This headline is beneath you.
You want DYI, you buy a white box , a gateway , a dell. Not an ibm or apple or superdome. Certain products are designed to be simple to use, reliable and remarkably complex engineered behind. Making it super easy to open up and tingle invite enormous support and quality issues.
get this dumb shit outta here. fuck sakes at least they're trying to make repairability an option. you can rent or buy the tools that they would have the genius bar staff use or you can either go to an apple store or get someone else to fix it, you have options now. use them.
35 Kg you serious?
Apple loves to make it harder and harder for the normal person at home just swap out a battery or repair an apple product. Its all in the planned obsolescence apple designs into their products.
RDKLInc Lol seems cost effective
if apple really cares about the environment why cannot they make removable cases for iPhones, iPads and Macs so that we can change batteries when needed without driving to the repair shops or use this kit tim_cook WINWIN saveplanetearth
Apple caring for the environment of course.
Wtf
How else can they inflate the phone price if they don't keep doing that?
Watch what you wish for. 😂
And it cost $1400!!!
I could lift that (ง ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ง
Next time just buy a Fairphone or a shiftphones 🤷♀️
just think of the nice little side line, you will be able to set up , fixing phones,
People: we want the right to repair! Also people: we want to right to repair and still complain about it You’re using the same tools as the Geniuses. Now you can pretend play technician.
So many smooth brains missing the point lmao
Great for content I guess?
I can’t wait until each phone is made out of a single piece of glass so people will STFU about this stuff
Lol always something to cry about. Total weight of the repair tools (tray, suction clamp, screen holding suction cups, pizza cutter wheel) is not 79 lbs it’s more like 20ish.
I know you are not complaining…..
RDKLInc this is hilarious.
and they removed chargers to save environment😂😂 What a Joke!!
I agree with you that this is not the best option for an individual (especially, amateur) to do the repair. However, this is still a major win for a Right To Repair community. The repair guides alone should help improve the quality of repairs at mall kiosks and other places.
Some would say apple put all its weight behind the repair program?
overkill
Is there any way to make people at verge happy?
“Oh YoU WaNtED RiGhT tO RePaIr!”
I need Iphone battery replacement. Not sure who can do it though.
MaliciousCompliance
😂😂😂😂😂
apple is apple
I wouldn’t try to repair my own iPhone if they paid me to try.
What’s that in kilos and gram?
Right 2 Repair!
Seems like a rubber gasket and some screws could fix this problem.
I already knew Tim Apple was a weasel
This tweet was later used by many scholars as the literal definition of the term “first world problems”
Metric, please.
You wanted self repair - here, have some self repair.
I need a kit for the iPad Pro. I’d rent it to repair my screen.
Apple shipped me a 35.8-kilogram iPhone repair kit to fix a 31.2-gram battery
The repair kits are ridiculous. I have replaced several iPhone screens and a battery and these repair kits are so unnecessary
How much is this in a sane unit? 😅
Replacing cell phone lithium batteries is not a task for the faint of heart. Quite frankly I recommend paying money and letting a technician deal with potentially dangerous lithium battery packs.
Give us tools! Give us parts! Give us tools! Give us parts! Give us to—too many tools!!!
Only Apple would do such a thing!
Being environmental but has thw worst cables and totally unrepairable products
Maybe they should have a section of their store where you can come and use the machine..shipping that is ridiculous!

What a terrible blunder. Good Going
Y’all complain about a repair program, apple finally caved in, now y’all complaining about its weight. They use the exact same machines in the store. So ofc they are going to ship the same things to the public. Using real quality apple equipment
Why are you complaining about this on twitter🤦♂️
It includes a whole lot of _gravitas_
Apple has never provided parts to any third party. ifixit parts are presumably purchased from Shenzhen, China, and then sold to consumers in Europe and the United States at a premium. Besides, the quality is not as good as the original.
Apple provides the same repair tools and manuals as the Genius Bar, but some people say these tools are too complicated and are deliberately difficult. This is very ridiculous.
I didn't understand 'pound' and 'ounce'
The dumbest this I have read all week.
Pound, ounce… could you please be a little more retarted. Thanks a lot
Most eco friendly big tech US company. 🤮
What's that in real weight?, not bags of Sugar?
tim_cook could you also please ship someone with repair kit to assist wanna-repair-my-own-iphone-at-home fans?
They're trying to be environmentally friendly, right? Imagine how much fuel it costs to ship a million of these per year.
Does action Jackson know about this
TF is pounds and ounces
The price is OK. Not sure about the activation part tho. If I lived closer to an Apple store I would probably get them to do it.
They want to overwhelm customers and forcing them to submit their phones to service centres
Yall were crying over that repair kit for years and now complaning about its’ weight lmao
I’m certain the next iPhone you buy won’t fit in the repair kit they sent you. Apple loves the idea of controlled obsolescence.
Maybe that’s why having them do the repair is so expensive, they use a fresh repair kit for each repair.
Wouldn’t this have been a better experience as a video article?
79 british pound, DAMM!!
StarFire2258 may have overlooked this but how much was all that cost wise?
« I’m starting to think Apple doesn’t want us to repair them » Lol i knew it the second they announced it, it’s only for the regulators, to claim “it’s possible” but they made it the worst for consumers. Low move by apple, not the first
🤦🏽♂️
so passive aggressive 😂
Imagine living in a country so advance but doesn't use metrics
and its cheaper than apple service?
It’s publicly disclosed, isn’t it? Stop crying
You (repeatedly) asked for it. They delivered.
It's called the real right to repair.
TFW you should've got the S22Ultra...
