FILE - In this Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011 file photo, a man shovels snow to clear a driveway near 5pointz, a graffiti art gallery in the Long Island City neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York. On Thursday, Feb. 20, 2020, a federal appeals court gave its approval to a $6.7 million award for two dozen graffiti artists whose spray paintings at the once-famous site that attracted thousands of spectators were destroyed to make room for high-rise luxury residences.
The Long Island City, Queens, graffiti site known as 5Pointz was a tourist attraction that drew thousands of spectators daily and formed a backdrop to the 2013 movie, “Now You See Me.” It was also a site for an Usher tour. Many of the art works were temporary. “A Banksy painting at 5Pointz would have possessed recognized stature, even if it were temporary,” the appeals court said.
After artists sued, U.S. District Judge Frederic Block in Brooklyn concluded that the art works reflected “striking technical and artistic mastery and vision worthy of display in prominent museums if not on the walls of 5Pointz.” Marie Cecile Flageul, a curator who worked with the 21 artists who will share the award, said the appeals ruling demonstrated how far graffiti has come from the 1970s when many artists used it to express their anger.
In New York, you can get massive payouts for anything. That's why I would never rent or own property there. You know that's where all your money is going.
Typical liberal N.Y. Get rewarded for breaking the law by defacing someone else’s property. And the property owner was required to pay taxes on something they were ultimately denied access to.
This is stupid.
WTAF
deray Sounds like a Trump/Kushner thing.
Umm it really did not make the building look that appealing in the first place. Think this federal judge needs a mental evaluation & then removed from the bench.
I have a great art project. One of these graffiti artists needs to head over to everyone of the appeals court judges and spray paint the hell out of their houses and their offices. I have a feeling they would think differently.
Wow what a win for these guys. Deserved.
Sure we've got money to burn.
Are these artists commissioned, or at least given permission, to use the building(s) as a canvas? What is the background for the 1990 act that was designed to protect the outdoor artwork? Why was it needed?
Developer fined for tearing down property they owned
Every day I realise how insanely cancerous and stupid the left is.
Stupid ruling.
