Women accusing opera legend Placido Domingo of sexual harassment describe similar m.o.: late night calls, career talk and requests for private meetings at his apartment or hotel room. His response below. Read more:

In this Friday, July 12, 2019, photo, Placido Domingo speaks during a news conference about his upcoming show "Giovanna d'Arco" in Madrid, Spain. Eight opera singers and a dancer have told The Associated Press that they were sexually harassed by Domingo, one of the most celebrated and powerful men in opera. The women say the encounters took place over three decades, at venues that included opera companies where he held top managerial positions.

But his accusers and others in the industry say there is a troubling side to Domingo — one they say has long been an open secret in the opera world. In addition to the nine accusers, a half-dozen other women told the AP that suggestive overtures by Domingo made them uncomfortable, including one singer who said he repeatedly asked her out on dates after hiring her to sing a series of concerts with him in the 1990s.

“However, I recognize that the rules and standards by which we are — and should be — measured against today are very different than they were in the past. I am blessed and privileged to have had a more than 50-year career in opera and will hold myself to the highest standards.” Seven of Domingo’s nine accusers told the AP they feel their careers were adversely impacted after rejecting his advances, with some saying that roles he promised never materialized and several noting that while they went on to work with other companies, they were never hired to work with him again.

One of them said she had sex with him twice, including at the Biltmore hotel in Los Angeles. When Domingo left for a performance, the woman said, he put $10 on the dresser, saying, “I don’t want you to feel like a prostitute, but I also don’t want you to have to pay to park.” But ultimately, those who talked to the AP said they felt emboldened by the #MeToo movement and decided the most effective way to attack the entrenched sexual misconduct in their industry was to call out the behavior of opera’s most prominent figure.

After that incident, she said, Domingo started calling her at home frequently, although she had not given him her number. He told her she was a talented singer with a promising future and he wanted to help her. Domingo was an artistic consultant at LA Opera in the 1980s when his stardom went mainstream. Newsweek magazine dubbed him “The King of The Opera” in a 1982 cover story and he appeared on popular television shows like “Sesame Street,” where a character, Placido Flamingo, was named for him. His collaboration in the “Three Tenors,” with the late Luciano Pavarotti and Jose Carreras, produced the best-selling classical recording of all time.

What are their names?Show the evidence, not their words.l could now say that your editor-in-chief was trying to get me into bed 20 Heard ago, give you dates, places and circumstances, and find a few people who would be willing to confirm it.But that's not proof! This is bullshit!

It seems Placido was never flaccido

Seems ironic when asking Alexa to play music by Placido Domingo today the first played was “Yesterday'

But remained silent until now? Hmm...

I’d’ve ended w. That said, thanks to all who rode the D. Kisses

Funny how they are canceling this opera singer, and kudos for stepping up to the plate, but we have a buffoon in the White House and he does this an worse and Donald the destroyer gets away with it.

Stop tweeting his response as though it is somehow the lede. This is incredible and much-needed reporting, but you do these women a disservice by making sure this is what people see first.

We’ve seen this opera before

Finicula Funicumee 🎼

What kind of response is that? That it used to be ok in the past but now it isn't

KTLA This was all foretold in the classic Pavarotti film Yes, Giorgio.

ugh who else will be uncovered from the classical music world? i’m glad I didn’t pursue opera singing after all, oh wait it doesn’t matter what we do or where we work we can’t escape these assholes anywhere

TL;DR 'I did it'

Time to retire, PlacidoDomingo

Did he say that, basically, he’s had a very long career and social standards have changed over all those decades so if he was offensive *gasp* he was just a product of the times?! Typical. What a typical response. Burn it all down. I’m so sick of this.

Oh brother 🤥🤥🤥
